⚡ We often think about energy in terms of what we use: electricity, gas, fuel, batteries. 💡

But energy is moving through the world around us all the time, from sunlight and heat to wind, gravity, plants and people.

Permaculture encourages us to look at these flows and relationships, and to ask different questions.

Where is energy coming from?
Where is it going?
What is it affecting?

That shift in perspective can open up new possibilities for how we design our homes, gardens, communities and everyday lives.

🌱 Try it this week: pick one everyday activity and pay attention to the energy moving through it. What do you notice?

🌱 Healthy soil is more than something plants grow in.

It's a living system, full of relationships between roots, fungi, insects, microorganisms, water and organic matter. And the good news is that, given the right conditions, damaged soils can recover.

Our latest Member Digest explores our recent Soil theme through stories, ideas and reflections from across the permaculture community.

Inside you'll find Louise Ney's Finding a Rhythm and Rebecca Wootton's Show, Don't Tell, alongside stories exploring compost, natural farming, grief, gardening and the power of leading by example.

The Member Digest is our digital publication for members, bringing together Permaculture Association news, member stories and ideas from across the wider permaculture movement. Members receive three editions each year, with opportunities to contribute their own stories and ideas.

Already a member? Log in to your Member Dashboard to read the latest edition and browse previous issues.

Not a member? Membership is just £3.50 a month and is one way to get closer to the people, ideas and projects shaping the permaculture community - and the Digest is one of the benefits that comes with it.

🌻 Seasonal Observation | August

Late summer brings subtle changes. Fruits ripen, seeds begin to travel, the light softens and the seasons slowly start to turn.

This month, we're inviting you to pause for a moment and notice what's happening around you.

What have you spotted recently? Perhaps it's the arrival of elderberries, insects in the garden, flowers going over, or something completely unexpected.

Share what you've noticed in the comments. We'd love to hear what August looks like where you are.

🌿 Community Spotlight

Every month, we shine a light on some of the inspiring projects, ideas and people that make up our membership community.

This month we're inspired by Project Holding Space in Wales, where seasonal Digital Wellbeing days invite people to reconnect with nature through hands-on land care, and in Portugal, where new digital tools are helping support regenerative design and collaboration.

There are hundreds of permaculture projects across the UK, Europe and beyond, each exploring different ways of living, learning and working with nature.

Swipe through to discover this month's featured projects.

💚 Are you a member with a project of your own? Add it to our Permaculture Project Map and it could feature in a future Community Spotlight.

🌿 What if rest was part of the design?

We often think a 'good' life is one that's always moving forward - always productive, always busy, always making progress.

Permaculture invites us to see things differently.

Natural systems aren't in constant motion. They ebb and flow. There are times for growth, times for abundance, and times for rest. Each season has its purpose.

What if we designed our own lives with those rhythms in mind?

As summer unfolds, perhaps we don't need to fill every moment or earn our rest.

Sometimes, slowing down isn't stepping away from life. It's reconnecting with it.

🌿 What helps you slow down and reconnect?

🌿 It was wonderful to meet so many people at the ever-brilliant this weekend.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand to chat with our CEO Andy Goldring, our International Officer Maria Paez, and our fantastic volunteer, Jasmine Ward. We loved hearing about the inspiring work happening place across the UK.

We also asked visitors to our stand a simple question: What's your biggest barrier to living more sustainably?

The answers were remarkably consistent: cost, plastic, time and knowledge came up multiple times.

We also invited people to tell us which areas of permaculture they're most interested in exploring, helping us better understand where people want to learn, connect and take action.

These conversations matter. They help us shape our work, create resources that meet real needs and ensure we're supporting people where they are.

Thanks again to everyone who came and shared their thoughts. We can't wait to see you again next year! 🌿

Most people don't go looking for permaculture.

They stumble across it...and wonder why they've never heard of it before.

That's because permaculture isn't just about gardening. It's a way of understanding the connections between people, nature and everyday life, and discovering practical ways to create positive change.

If you're curious to explore further, join from this October for our next six-week online Introduction to Permaculture.

Across parts of the UK, people are adapting to hosepipe restrictions and thinking more carefully about water.

It's a reminder that our surroundings are always giving us information...if we take the time to notice.

Permaculture begins with observation. Not because observation is an end in itself, but because understanding what's really happening often leads to better long-term solutions.

This summer, you might notice:

💧 Where water disappears quickly.
🌿 Which plants seem to cope well with dry conditions.
🌳 Which places stay cool, even on hot days.
🪴 Which areas of your garden, neighbourhood or local park seem most resilient.

You don't need to have all the answers. Sometimes the most valuable thing you can do is simply pay attention.

What have you noticed this summer?
