Stroke Association - Scotland Every day in Scotland, people wake up to the catastrophic impact of a stroke.

We're here to help them, and the people close to them, find strength through support.

We are marking next week with the launch of a wonderful wee video featuring four of our volunteers talking about what they do for us and why they do it.

Kerry Dalgetty from Brechin in Angus, Neil Murray from Culross in Fife and students Laolu Tossinn Akin and Izzy Pickard speak movingly about their own stroke stories and sing the praises of being part of a large, lively volunteering family supporting stroke survivors across Scotland.

Would you like to join them - or know someone who might? We are looking to recruit more volunteers in Irvine, Prestwick, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scottish Borders, West Lothian, Perth and Inverness to expand vital face-to-face support in local communities.

To watch a longer version of the video and find out more about getting involved in our work visit https://www.stroke.org.uk/scotland/get-involved

Huge thanks to Todd Weller at Well Good for a fantastic job producing the video.

Neil Murray (left) Ruth Hector and Kelly Sagar are flying the flag for us at a Volunteer Scotland event in Stirling today ahead of next week.

Our passionate, energetic and committed volunteers punch way above their weight and we couldn't help stroke survivors and their loved ones across Scotland without them.

We've got our own special event coming soon too. Join us at 6pm on Saturday when we'll be posting our new volunteering video featuring four of our volunteers talking about what they do for us and why they do it. 📽️🍿🤩

Scotland is smashing it for !

A postman from Eaglesfield in Dumfries and Galloway has raised £5,000 by creating a calendar featuring photographs of local wildlife, scenes and events. And presented the cheque to our Associate Director in Scotland, John Watson, as part of the annual Stroke Association fundraising initiative.

Andrew K Murray calendars have become coveted by locals over the years, raising a total of £20,620 for charity since 2020. But £5,000 is the most he has ever raised for one charity 🙌

We are enormously grateful to Andrew and his generous supporters who are contributing to the development of new stroke treatments and helping to ensure that the 240 people who survive stroke every day in the UK make a good recovery.

Our volunteers have been going through a purple patch for !

Christa Reid and David Jones were in the Vaccination Hub at the Bon Accord Centre in Aberdeen on Wednesday, while Craig Borland, Sharon Williams and Lesley Dewar turned out for a crunch match at Thorn Athletic on Sunday. Sadly, the Johnstone team lost but fans were out in strength and some dropped by the stand to hear about Stroke Association support in Scotland and the Renfrewshire Stroke Group.

Down in Dumfries Sheryl Herring purpled up the carers hub she attends at NHS Dumfries & Galloway Dumfries Royal Infirmary to highlight Make May Purple, which marks Stroke Awareness Month.

Wonderful work from our fabulous volunteers 👏

Today we are sharing Eleanor Sim's story for Stroke Awareness Month. Eleanor had a stroke just hours after being born at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy last spring.

Eleanor's mum Kimberley is opening up as the wee girl approaches her first birthday on 30th May. She said, “If sharing our story helps even one family feel seen or recognise symptoms sooner, then it’s worth it.”

The Fife family is also raising money for Stroke Association services, including the Childhood Stroke Support Team. Kimberley is asking family, friends and followers of her Fife Family Focus page to forego coffee and pastries this month and donate to support the cause.

We're almost half way through the Stroke Association's Make May Purple campaign to raise funds for vital stroke services. But the drive and dedication of our supporters doesn't end there.

Two sisters from Stirling who have raised more than £20,000 for us are pressing their "sterling" event management skills into action again with a night of live music, dancing and family friendly fun in Auchterarder on 13th June.

Shirley Paterson and Kirsty Macgowan lost their mum to a stroke in 2008 and have campaigned in her memory ever since.

Live anywhere near Auchterarder and fancy a great night out for a good cause? Full details 👇

Heading into the weekend, we wanted to share this terrific photo of many of our fantastic volunteers when they met at V&A Dundee recently.

The event was run to provide volunteers with a chance to share their experiences, celebrate achievements and plan for the year ahead.

Delighted to report that we now have 90 volunteers working in various roles from Community Connectors and group volunteers to Weekly Telephone Call volunteers. Coming out of COVID we had 30.

Many thanks to everyone who gives their time to support stroke survivors, their loved ones and carers. We need more help in Irvine, Prestwick, West Lothian, Perth and Inverness.

Join our wonderful, growing family! https://www.stroke.org.uk/scotland/get-involved

There’s two weeks to go until our 31 minutes in May challenge kicks off.

We’re asking people to do 31 minutes of exercise a day in May – any exercise they like- this Stroke Awareness Month.

Donald Law from Bampton in Oxfordshire did the challenge last year and found it both hugely motivating and rewarding. He would sing 'Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow' during his daily routine and loved the encouragement and support he got from friends, family and others in his Facebook group.

Every pound you raise will help stroke survivors find strength through support.

Our pre Scottish election campaign is ramping up ahead of polling on 7th May.

We have been working with seven other health bodies including Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists Royal College of Occupational Therapists Scottish Stroke Nurses Forum to highlight the urgent need to improve stroke treatment and care in Scotland to candidates vying for power. And more than 240 stroke professionals have signed the campaign call to deliver stroke as a priority.

Our campaign is focused on five practical, cost-effective asks that stroke professionals believe are necessary to bring about change.

The fifth and final ask is about involving Healthcare Improvement Scotland when Scotland's health boards continually fail to meet national standards for stroke care 👇

Currently the national average for providing the 'stroke care bundle' (considered essential to improve patient outcomes) is 52.9% against a national quality standard of 80%. It was 64% in 2019.

This is the fourth of the five asks of politicians that we - and our partners - are making in the run up to the Scottish election in May.

The Guardian ran an article in January that highlighted British and Irish Association of Stroke Physicians' (BIASP) concerns about the shortage of stroke specialists across the UK.

The The Scottish Government would only be able to deliver the other three asks, on thrombectomy, rehabilitation and protecting stroke beds, if they invest in a strong stroke workforce.

Let's make sure political candidates vying for power in May know that🙏
