What happens when Black men experiencing severe mental health difficulties are offered a safe, creative space built around music, identity and belonging?
The results speak for themselves.
A newly published peer-reviewed paper explored the impact of Finding Rhythms projects delivered alongside NHS mental health services in Harrow, London.
Across three projects:
🎶 27 Black men created 3 original albums
🎶 Participants reported improved wellbeing, confidence and belonging
🎶 Inpatient admissions reduced by 60%
🎶 Hospital bed days reduced by almost 75%
🎶 Men who had previously been labelled “hard to reach” felt seen, respected and safe enough to tell their own stories.
This is what culturally relevant, creative mental health support can look like. Huge respect to every participant, facilitator, clinician and partner involved. A massive shout out to Dr Shona Joyce Herron for bringing these projects into being and such an insightful paper on the impact of our work.
The paper reminds us:
Maybe people aren’t “hard to reach.”
Maybe systems have been hardly trying.
