We have some unfortunate news about AZ the bearded dragon. She had to be taken to the vets today having become lethargic and looking generally unwell without any obvious reason as to why. She went downhill very quickly and showed signs of anaemia. Whilst at the vets her heartbeat was slow and was continuing to drop. Bloods couldn't be taken due to her condition and the prognosis was not good. We had to make the decision to put her to sleep as her body was shutting down and we did not want her to suffer any more. Her fosterer was there with her at her very last moments and she left us peacefully.

A post mortem showed that she had a few follicles but of significance were multiple abscesses which had ruptured and were infected. The bacteria reached her blood stream causing septicemia. Az was absolutely fine a few days ago and so it's a shock to us all that this has happened to her.

A huge thank you to her fosterer Molly for taking such good care of her, including throughout her recovery when Az had surgery last year. Az didn't have a great start in life but Molly has showed her love and kindness. RIP Az, we will miss you ❤️

*****Reptile Hide Safety Warning *****

Yesterday this poor corn snake was found trapped in an Exo Terra reptile hide. The snake had become completely stuck between the inside lip of the entrance to the point that the only way to get him out was to break the hide with extreme care. *Do not do this if you don't know what you're doing as it could cause further injury if done incorrectly - take straight to an exotic vet*

Please check anything that you put in your reptile enclosures as, although this is designed specifically for reptiles, it is clearly unsafe for corn snakes and other similar sized snakes and not worth the risk.

After an examination by the wonderful vets who dropped everything to fit him in there appear to be no broken bones. He has been given pain relief and is being closely monitored to ensure there are no serious issues.

We are in contact with the manufacturer to investigate this incident. It could happen with any object put inside a vivarium so please thoroughly check decor etc... for safety purposes. This snake is lucky it wasn't any worse.

RHUBARB! Beautiful but deadly.. well, not really deadly, just very defensive at the moment but this isn't surprising after the traumatic experience he has been through. Found in a back garden by a lovely couple who, despite being wary of snakes did everything they could to find him help and contacted us. Unfortunately no-one claimed him and we have no idea about his background or the experiences he has been through.

He's clearly not had a pleasant experience as he is not fond of people at all but, as with most reptiles, with time, patience and a bit of understanding and gentle handling we suspect he will become more tolerant of people. We can't guarantee this however so he needs someone experienced with defensive snakes and who is prepared to work with him or to accept him if it turns out that he is just a grumpy snake! Please get in touch if you think you're the right person and would like to offer him a home!

Not something we see often. A little swift who was found on a doorstep and has been having trouble flying. Little bit underweight but no obvious issues. Been handed over to Caerphilly Bird Rescue for continued care and release. Swifts should be heading back to Africa at this time of year so its important they are a good weight and condition for their long journey.

FLORA and SAGE are two adorable musk turtles who have been with us for quite some time. Turtles are typically harder to rehome as they're often overlooked which is a shame as they are really lovely reptiles with their individual characters.

Flora has come out of her shell (not literally thankfully!) and will try to climb out of the tank to see you! She also enjoys taking a nap on her basking platform at night.

Sage is a cheeky chap who will use his good looks to entice more food from you, but don't give in, he won't appreciate the extra grams of weight if overfed 😉

They are to be housed separately, set up requirements are detailed on our website.

AZ has been through a lot having been rescued from very poor conditions when she was very young. When we found the perfect home it sadly fell through and she had to come back to us due to the unexpected consequences of COVID-19 (no fault of the adopters). She braved the operating table due to suffering from reproduction issues and recovered incredibly well. Her fosterer has been taking such great care of her but she can't stay forever. She is timid so needs someone who is prepared to be patient with her and built trust. Once she settles we have no doubt she will make a lovely companion to the right family.
