Cenacolo Community in Medjugorje Needs Your Help!

Many of you have visited the Cenacolo Community during pilgrimages to Medjugorje. You heard residents share their stories and your hearts were touched. They bravely told of their broken lives, the anguish they caused their families, the money they stole to spend on drink or drugs – laying themselves bare for all to see.

So many lives have been saved by the amazing Cenacolo organisation. The World Health Organisation say it is the most effective drug rehabilitation programme for addicts with over 90% recovery rates.

Mother Elvira Petzozzi , RIP, founded the Cenacolo movement to save homeless young men in her home town of Saluzzo, Italy. The residents work and pray and have no worldly distractions like phones and TVs. Mother Elvira believed that when God is at the centre of their lives, they can recover.

There are 80+ such communities in the world today. They all rely on providence for survival. When Covid prevented pilgrims from travelling to Medjugorje, the Cenacolo residents were left without donations and they, like millions of others, went hungry. Many of you will remember that a priest asked Arthur McCluskey Foundation directors if we could help them. We appealed to our donors and the response was amazing.

Recently a piece of land which was a perfect space for workshops came on the market. The community were able to buy it and pay for it in two instalments. The second payment is almost due so they are asking if we can help raise some funds.

Please click on the link below to view a video the community made during Covid to thank our donors. They offered to pray for us all and invited us to send Prayer/Petitions to them. We continue to do that so please send your name if you would like to be on the list. Some residents take the list up Apparition Hill where it is presented to Our Lady as they pray the Rosary for all of you.

Arthur McCluskey RIP - 14th Anniversary

Today, we remember Arthur on the anniversary of his passing from this life. In June 1999, he was healed from a gambling addiction in Medjugorje. His life changed completely as he never gambled or drank alcohol again. We pray that he is now enjoying eternal life with the Lord.

His new life was firmly based on his love for Jesus and Mary. Holy mass and prayer became the focus of his existence. In 2004 he established a charity in Ireland and the UK which aimed to relieve poverty and advance education for the poor of Bosnia Herzegovina.

Arthur’s work for the poor continues through the Arthur McCluskey Foundation. He would be glad to know that his hard-working directors are relieving poverty by financial support to poor families and continuing his initiative of supporting students.

He would be amazed that we are supporting Mary’s Hand, the Cenacolo Community and Mother Krispina’s Women’s Refuge. Mary’s Hands did not exist in Arthur’s lifetime. The Women’s Refuge and Cenacolo Community did not need our help until the pandemic hit the world.

He would be overjoyed that we continue to support Mother’s Village Orphanage and Miracles Prosthetic Limb Clinic in Mostar which was very dear to his heart. We invite you to watch 21 years of our humanitarian work on YouTube –“Arthur McCluskey Foundation - Our Work with your Help”. Without you, our wonderful donors, we would be helpless.

If you would like to support Arthur’s work, please visit www.arthurmc.com and click the “Donate Now” button to make donations via credit/debit cards or PayPal. Please contact [email protected] or [email protected] if you have any queries.

If you find yourself near St Paul’s Church in Emo, Co Laois, do visit the McCluskey family grave which is to the left of the Grotto. Thank you for reading about Arthur and his work on the anniversary of his death. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam!

These last photos of Arthur were taken on 23rd June 2011 at Kiseljak Kindergarten and 24th June 2011 in the grounds of the Franciscan Convent and Kindergarten at Bijelo Polje. They were taken by his sister Pat who still misses her beloved big brother.

St Joseph The Worker Nursing Home

Many pilgrims to Medjugorje have visited this Nursing Home in Ljubuski. It was gifted to the Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul by Sr Muriel RIP whose donors provided the funds.

Sr Augustina has written to thank all of you who provided hospital beds. She asked if we can help with the replacement of old, ineffective and costly radiators. The intense heat at the moment makes life very difficult for the elderly residents. The radiators need to be replaced by units that provide air conditioning as well as heating. Each unit costs €700 but any donation no matter how small will be greatly appreciated.

If you would like to help, please visit www.arthurmc.com. Click the “Donate Now” button and donate by credit/debit cards or PayPal. Alternatively, you can transfer money electronically to our bank account. Details are provided as well as an address should you wish to post a cheque. If you have any questions, please email [email protected] or [email protected].

You can see photographs of the Nursing Home and of the new units below. Thank you for reading this appeal from Sr Augustina!

Rodoč Church, Mostar. Restored Altar installed.

Friends and directors of Arthur McCluskey Foundation visited the Church of St John the Baptist in Rodoč on our recent visit. Many of you supported a very grateful Fr Danko Perutina in the refurbishment work, flooring costs and purchase of benches.

The main church in Mostar, St Peter & Paul, was destroyed by fire during the war. Franciscans had already dismantled the huge wooden altar as it needed restoration. The altar sections were stored in the basement and escaped the fire. St Peter & Paul was only completed in recent years and has wonderful mosaics where the altar once stood.

The Franciscans hoped the wooden Altar could be refurbished and installed in Rodoč when funds became available. Kind donors supported Fr Danko through every stage of the interior work. The Altar was restored where it was made in Italy and was installed in time for Christmas 2024. Both these churches are worth a visit.

Fr Danko has one last task – the installation of air conditioning units. If you would like to help towards the €60,000 costs, do please visit www.arthurmc.com. Click “Donate Now” button to donate in credit/debit cards or through PayPal.

Please see the photographs of the old and newly restored altar which is truly a work of art. If you have any questions, email [email protected] or [email protected].

Directors and friends in the photograph are: Tom Griffin, Pat Henry, Christy & Rose Carolan, Donal O’Shea, Margaret McEntee, her sister Christina Hourican and Dominic McGorian, Irish Tenor, who sang at our concerts in Medjugorje on 18th and 25th May.
