BMC Peak Area

Thank you to everyone who joined Peter for our social walk from Glossop last Wednesday. We visited Higher Shelf Stones, Bleaklow Head and C**k Hill bagging two Ethels, visiting two trig. points and paying our respects at two 1940's aircraft wreck sites along the way.

Last night's (July 29th) BMC Peak Area meeting was preceded by quite a few members (and a few very welcome non-members) enjoying a walk, and others climbing on a sun-drenched Stanage Edge! BMC President Dominic Oughton was among the climbers and kindly down-climbed (barefoot) to meet the walking party too when we passed by. Thanks to everyone who took part. Let's do this again!

To precede our Area Meeting this Wednesday (29th July) we've organised an opportunity for both a friendly social walk or social climb that afternoon (open to both members and non-members)! We're heading to Stanage Edge, do come along!

Our BMC president Dominic Oughton will be climbing, offering an opportunity for a chat with the president, and the walk is planned to meet up with the climbers at some stage too, all being well.

🔴 Weather permitting Dom and others (including local volunteers) plan to climb at Stanage Popular End, starting around 2pm too, so come along for a climb and a chat!

UPDATE - the Pennine Way has now re-opened.

❗29th June 2026: URGENT NOTICE
The Pennine Way is currently NOT accessible between Crowden and the Black Hill trig point in the Peak District due to a serious wildfire in the area. The fire is concentrated at Laddow Rocks and there is no escape route from the trail.

A diversion route is shown on the National Trails website at the following link: https://tinyurl.com/2e4xu28y

The diversion route is summarised as follows: To continue northwards, after crossing the A628 at Torside Reservoir, continue along the track all the way in to Crowden, leaving the Pennine Way at the point where it turns left heading northwards towards Laddow Rocks. Take the footpath heading north east out of Crowden towards Hey Moss, passing over Westend Moss and Tooleyshaw Moss to rejoin the Pennine Way at the Black Hill trig point. If heading southwards along the trail, leave the trail at the Black Hill trig point following the same footpath towards Crowden.

The Big BMC festival starts today!

For all those attending the Sponsored Wildfire Walk from Hathersage on Saturday 30th, Remember to wear your bright colours, but more importantly, please remember to bring with you plenty of water, sun cream and a hat.
(As well as all your other hiking essentials)
