10 BMC volunteers from near and far joined with others from Moors for the Future (staff and volunteers) to plant sphagnum moss on appropriately named Goyt Moss (behind the Cat and Fiddle pub) in the Peak District on Friday. We planted 3.2k sphagnum plants over an area of rough high moorland adjacent to that which suffered a devastating moorland fire earlier in the year. We were treated to a spectacular cloud inversion early in the day. The event was organised by BMC North West Area volunteer Steve Charles and looked after on the day by our own Access volunteer Peter.

There are more BMC 'Get Stuck In!' conservation volunteering days planned for early in the New with at least two already planned for the Peak District: tree planting near Bradwell with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust on the 10th January and sphagnum on Kinder with National Trust on the 22nd of Jan with more being planned. The BMC and Mountaineering Scotland are joining forces to raise £60,000 for urgent refurbishments to our members-only Don Whillans and Alex MacIntyre Memorial Huts to keep them open for future generations.

🙏🏽It would be brilliant if as many folk as possible would ask their own MP to go to a briefing, being facilitated by the BMC among others, about improving public access to nature, to mark the 25th anniversary of the passing of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act, in Portcullis House next week (Tue 25th Nov). It's easy to do, see below👇🏽

Lets encourage parliamentarians to take the next steps beyond CRoW!

As we mark 25 years since the Countryside & Rights of Way Act (CROW), the BMC is calling for renewed action to make sure everyone can experience the benefits of being outdoors.

🚶🏼‍♂️‍➡️ Ten eager BMC and Mountain Training Association members joined volunteer Peter to help Peak District, National Trust plant sphagnum moss up on Featherbed Moss, overlooking Abbey Brook and Howden Reservoir on Sunday.

🌱 Despite short, sharp walk in and a damp and foggy day up there everyone worked tremendously hard leading to us planting a superb ~6k sphagnum plants all told!

👉🏽 There are a whole raft of BMC Get Stuck In sphagnum planting opportunities coming up in the Peak this winter, working with either the Moors for the Future Partnership or Nat. Trust (including one this Friday, 14th Oct, in the Goyt Valley), and more due to be added shortly too.

🥾 BMC Peak Area walks

Sunday 2 November – Alstonefield
The Mynydd Climbing Club invites BMC members and friends to join their monthly winter walk on Sunday 2nd November. The walk is around 10 miles in length with 500m of ascent. It takes in four summits on the limestone plateau in the Dove and Manifold valley area. Most of the walk is on public rights of way with some untracked ground on Access land. The ascents are generally short but steep.

(Note - the walk is made possible by possible by the advent of CROW access land, which became law 25 years ago on 30 November 2000).

The walk will leave promptly at 1030 am from Alstonefield. To book a place on the walk please email [email protected] 🙏.

After the walk, Jay Whiting will be giving a talk on his 'Himalayan Triple Crown' (Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse in a single season), being the youngest British person to achieve this outstanding feat. The talk will take place straight after the walk (5pm) at Alstonefield Village Hall, where tea, coffee and biscuits will be served. All walk attendees are invited to attend. Please bring a change of clothes and footwear in case you get wet and muddy on the walk.
