SolidariTee A charity led by young people, directly supporting legal aid for refugees and asylum seekers.

SolidariTee is an international movement of students, and those who support us, fighting for the rights of refugees and asylum seekers. A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee their home due to fear of persecution because of their identity or beliefs. Today, refugees and asylum seekers who have fled violence and persecution, making unbelievably difficult and life-threatening journeys to reach safety, are frequently forced to live in unbearable conditions in ‘camps’ across Europe and around the world.

We’re a grant-giving charity, offering grants to NGOs (non-governmental organisations) which provide legal aid and other long-term, empowering forms of support to asylum seekers. We also work to raise awareness and inform the international community about the injustices perpetrated against refugees and asylum seekers worldwide, and about how we can create positive, lasting change to uphold the rights of all those affected by forced displacement. Our 800 student volunteers organise a variety of online and (covid-19 permitting) in-person events and activities, ranging from conferences and panel discussions through to pottery events and quiz nights, in addition to raising vital funds through the sale of our custom made t-shirts, or SolidariTees. In the 2020-21 academic year alone, we’ve provided grants totalling £103,000 to 6 different legal aid NGOs, and organised more than 100 different events and online initiatives. We’re student-led, but by no means student exclusive, and to make truly meaningful change we need to unite the international community as a whole. We're currently welcoming applications from people interested in joining our regional (uni) teams as Team Lead and Team Members.

This is your chance to be part of a welcoming community of young people at your uni working to build engagement amongst the student community to promote solidarity with refugees and other people who have been forced to flee their homes.

As part of a regional team, you'd be helping to organise fundraising and awareness-raising events to help fund refugee legal aid and mental health support - past examples include club nights, pub quizzes, sports tournaments, art events and more! You'd also help sell our SolidariTee t-shirts, which are designed by people with lived experience of displacement, to support our fundraising efforts.

Join the SolidariTee Central team for the 2026/27 academic year!

We're now welcoming applications for a variety of roles in our Central Team, in addition to the positions already open across our Leadership and Regional teams.

We’re a charity led by students and young people that works to make tangible, long-term change that combats harmful misinformation and improves the support available to refugees and asylum seekers.

Our Central Team plays a vital role in coordinating SolidariTee’s core functions and organising opportunities to bring our volunteers and supporters together. It's a great opportunity to make a difference while developing skills, building your knowledge, and having fun!

In part 2 of today's post on the UK and Greece's digital border technologies, take a look at Greece's implementation of a militarised digital surveillance system at the EU's external border.

The use of high-tech AI-powered monitoring systems, surveillance, and real-time movement tracking prevents people from accessing their fundamental rights to seek asylum and access legal protections, instead controlling people's movements before they enter the country.

Across both Greece and the UK, the increasing digitalisation of border and asylum systems is framed as a modernising step towards 'efficiency and security'. In reality, it expands surveillance over already marginalised groups of people, exacerbates existing inequalities, and undermines fundamental rights to asylum, movement, privacy and due process.

Over the coming months, we'll be taking a deep dive look into the increasing use of AI and digital technologies as tools of borders and of border violence.

In part 1 of today's post, we take a look at the UK's moves towards a digital immigration system, using biometric data, automated processing systems, and mass surveillance to monitor and control people's movements across borders.

This creates a 'digital hostile environment' that aligns with the UK's broader policies on immigration and asylum, designed to deter people from moving to or seeking asylum in the UK.

The wonderful Hannah selling our SolidariTees at a few weeks ago!

Pride Month is both a time to celebrate, and to continue to work towards justice, equality and safety for LGBTQ+ communities worldwide. But this work continues every month of the year.

People with marginalised s*xual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and/or s*x characteristics (SOGIESC) face persecution and stigma in many countries across the world, leading some people to flee their homes.

People seeking asylum on the grounds of their SOGIESC also often face heightened risks and barriers in the asylum process, which can lead to retraumatisation and further risks of physical and s*xual violence.

This is why we support grassroots partner organisations who provide trauma-informed legal assistance and mental health support to asylum seekers and refugees, taking an intersectional and holistic approach to supporting people who have been forcibly displaced.

Selling our tees is one of the ways we raise funds for our partners - they're designed by people with lived experience of displacement, ethically and sustainably manufactured, and a gorgeous visual statement of solidarity!

No one should need courage to find shelter

✖️ When Elias turned 18, he was left homeless and without any support from the Greek state.
✅ With support from one of the NGOs in the Stand In The Gap coalition, he was supported in finding housing, securing a stable life situation and a dignified job.

👉 Across Europe, people on the move are left to navigate the housing process without the support they need. These gaps lead to people being denied the protection they deserve.
