Hedgehog Helpers, Hedgehog Rescue Darlington We care for and rehabilitate sick and injured hedgehogs in the local area and are entirely self funded. Everyone knows the cute feisty little hedgehog.

We provide a point of contact for anyone in the area coming across a hedgehog they feel needs help. They trundle through our gardens munching on insects (and helping the gardener). Not everyone knows that their number have dropped by over a quarter in the last ten years. We need to take care of the ones we have when they are sick and injured. This group is run by volunteers. All comments or advice are the opinions of the volunteers who are not qualified vets. Please seek professional advice from a vet should you be wanting a diagnosis and/or treatment."

We had an escapee last night 🦔🤣🤣 Turned out to be our favourite escapologist Beech, who did a disappearing act in the ICU earlier in the year as a baby 🤦‍♀️🤣
Just a wee premature there lad, as you're away tonight with your brother Hazel to your home with the lovely Justine 😊
He came in as a baby at 105g and leaves at a wonderful 676g. Hazel came in at 102g, leaving us at 744g 🦔❤️

BEFORE YOU CLEAR THE LEAVES, CHECK WHO’S HIDING 🦔

A pile of fallen leaves may look like one more autumn job. To a hedgehog, it can provide valuable shelter or nesting material.

Hedgehogs are still active during autumn, feeding and gathering dry leaves, grass and other vegetation for their nests.

Leaf piles, hedge bases, long grass, log stacks and compost heaps can all provide somewhere sheltered.

Before tidying:

🍂 Watch and listen before disturbing the area

🍂 Move leaves gradually, starting at the outside edge

🍂 Never drive a fork or spade into the middle of a pile

🍂 Check long grass carefully before mowing or strimming

🍂 Leave some dry leaves in a quiet, sheltered corner if you can

If you uncover a resting hedgehog, stop, gently replace the covering and leave the area undisturbed unless the animal is in immediate danger.

Two big girls finally released last night 😊 weighing a whopping 1285g and 1175g. Good luck ladies and hope you stick around as you've landed on your paws in this garden!!
We've had a few other releases over the last week too, with hopefully more in the next week 😁Good luck to you all back out in the wild😊🥰🦔❤️🦔

If anyone has brought hogs to us recently, keep your eyes and ears open. Now the weather is " behaving", we'll be arranging to have them released back to you shortly 😀 If you could please make sure you have houses ready and food stocked up, that would be great, thank you!! 😊❤️🦔❤️🦔
