Child Accident Prevention Trust The UK’s leading charity working to reduce the number of children and young people injured, disabled and killed in accidents.

Our vision is a world where children lead active, healthy lives, safe from serious injury. The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) is the UK’s leading charity working to reduce the number of children and young people killed, disabled or seriously injured in accidents. We exist because accidents are a leading cause of death and serious injury for children and young people. Many of these accidents can be prevented.

Keeping children safe from accidents isn't about wrapping them in cotton wool or depriving them of experiences.

It’s about understanding the biggest risks and finding realistic ways to reduce them.

That’s why we look at the evidence to understand where, when and why the worst accidents happen.

Then we turn what we learn into practical tips that help make children safer without putting increased pressure on parents and carers.

We’re not here to judge. We’re here to equip families with the knowledge you need to keep your children safe.

Please follow us and interact with our posts so we can reach more families with important safety tips.

Are you decorating your home this Halloween? Light-up decorations such as pumpkins, cauldrons, torches and wands are fantastic for creating a spooktactular atmosphere. But many of these items are powered by button batteries which can badly hurt or kill a child if swallowed.

That’s why it’s so important when buying light-up Halloween toys that you check the battery compartment is secured with a screw or similar fastener to prevent children gaining access.

Sharp medical syringes being supplied with toys? It’s the latest horror story facing families, but as shocking as it is, it’s not surprising.

This danger is obvious, but it can often be difficult for families to know whether a toy is safe when you’re buying from an unknown seller on an online marketplace.

With Christmas shopping getting underway, please take extra care when buying toys online.

Check who you’re buying from, look for clear safety information and don’t assume a toy is safe just because it’s marketed for young children.

And don’t forget to check toys when they arrive. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts.

We’re so grateful that advances in medicine mean many grandparents can live longer and remain more active than their own grandparents. But, the medicines which can improve our health can be extremely dangerous for children.

That’s why it’s really important that medicines, even everyday painkillers, are kept out of sight and reach in any home that your child visits.

Remember:
• Put medicines where children can’t see them or reach them – in a locked cabinet if you can and in a room like the kitchen where there is usually an adult around.
• When you give children medicine, never pretend it is a treat or a sweet – they may get the wrong idea about other medicines.
• Look for safety tops but don’t rely on them – they will slow children down but may not stop them
• Don’t leave your handbag on the floor. And watch out for visitors putting their handbags on the floor too.

Halloween costumes can be scary, for all the wrong reasons if you buy from the wrong place!

Some fancy dress costumes are highly flammable so they can ignite almost instantly and burn fast.

It may mean spending a bit more but buying from a reputable store or website will be safer.

Whatever costume you buy, remind children to stay well away from naked flames and other heat sources.

Do you use a baby sleeping bag like this? Or perhaps you know someone who does?

The Office for Product Safety and Standards has issued a Safety Alert today warning parents to avoid baby sleeping bags with hoods or without arm holes, as babies can suffocate, overheat or die in them.

Nearly 50 have been recalled since 2023. And far too many are still available to buy online.

Sleep bags should be well-fitted (think neck and arm holes that fit well), so that your baby can’t wriggle down inside. And sleep bags with hoods or head coverings should be avoided.

Worryingly, these aren’t the only dangerous baby products you can buy online.

The Advertising Standards Authority has spotted lots of high-risk ads promising quick fixes to sleep-deprived or first-time parents.

It is warning parents to be on high alert for online ads promoting baby products that claim to help with colic, reflux, sleep and soothing.

Have you seen any baby product adverts you’re worried about? Let us know in the comments.

As we head towards the colder months now is a good time to check your electric blanket is safe for continued use.

Your blanket needs to be replaced if:
• It’s more than ten years old.
• The fabric is worn or frayed.
• There are scorch marks or discoloration.
• Wires are poking through the fabric.
• There is damage to any part of the electrical cord.
• The control is making a buzzing sound when switched on and/or is giving off a smell.
• The connector fitted to the blanket is damaged or over-heating.
