Cats In Distress Rescue, rehabilitation & rehoming cats & kittens in need, (and often helping people as well). This is the public page for Cats In Distress.

It is primarily used to alert people to cats & kittens that might have gone missing, have been found or are in need of assistance. Our other page, Friends of Cats In Distress, is a private group for anyone interested in finding out more about our work. Our private group allows us to share more information about often sensitive stories, also highlighting the cats & kittens available for adoption. Previous adopters can privately share photos and stories with other supporters of the charity; a feel good page with lots of heart warming stories. Cats In Distress was established in May 2016 and now helps over 400 cats a year. Run by Trustees and a team of volunteers, the charity is run from a purpose built rescue centre. The centre is built around a central enclosed garden and provides 7 spacious pens, 2 maternity units and an isolation pen. In addition, we have 8 outdoor units, and 14 fosterers, providing loving home to home care, for everything from new born kittens to golden oldies. All our cats & kittens are assessed and health checked, with any required treatments being carried out prior to adoption. They are all treated for parasites, neutered, (or a neutering voucher provided for kittens), microchipped, FULLY vaccinated and have 5 weeks free insurance. As well as traditional "rehoming" we are able to help with neutering costs, and in certain circumstances we can help with vets fees, (Ts& Cs apply). In addition, we try and ensure we have one long term foster space available for those emergency situations where an owned cat needs a temporary home. As much as we love cats, we realise there are just too many. Educating the public about the importance of neutering, our working cat team, not only work with farms & stables to neuter feral colonies but also conduct trap, neuter release programmes. We will never judge. Compassion for all, whether animals or people is and always will be at the heart of what we do. We don’t know what problems people are having to deal with in their lives; eviction, death, financial difficulties, cats arrive with us for a multitude of reasons. When calling us, we will do our very best to help. We pride ourselves on responding quickly and efficiently to enquiries. We aim to respond to general enquiries within 48 hours, normally a lot quicker, enquiries for rehoming are often answered within 6 hours. Visits to meet our cats can be arranged within 24 hours, with a subsequent home check carried out within 48 hours. From an initial enquiry to rehoming it can take as little as a weekend for a cat to be successfully rehomed. That’s not to say we rush things, we just believe in getting things done. We are passionate about all cats and work long hours providing help where & when its needed.

🚨 Every day until the debate, we'll be cross-examining the Government's response to our petition and highlighting why some of its arguments are rooted in outdated thinking that no longer reflects modern road safety, animal welfare, or public expectations.

🏛️ THE GOVERNMENT SAYS:

"DEFRA is researching operational challenges."

🐾 WE SAY:

That research does not address the problem we are asking the Department for Transport to fix.

The research they talk about is OUR best practice guide for councils collecting deceased cats from the roadside. Something we have been working on with DEFRA for a few years now; www.catsmatter.org/single-post/best-practice-guide-for-the-handling-of-deceased-cats

The Government's response repeatedly points to DEFRA's work as if it demonstrates progress on road collision reporting for cats by the Transport Department. It doesn't.

DEFRA's work does not answer any of those questions. It does not create a duty to stop. It does not create a duty to report. It does not address the legal inconsistency that requires reporting for dogs but not for cats. And it does not remove the welfare gap that leaves injured cats without the protections afforded to other animals.

When we ask the DfT why cats are excluded from Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act, they respond pointing to DEFRA's research, which simply shifts attention elsewhere. Research into local authority procedures cannot substitute for reform of road traffic law.

🐱 A cat can be microchipped and still be left at the roadside.
🐱 A cat can be scanned having not have received help when injured.

The Government should not confuse progress in one policy area with progress in another.

DEFRA's work helps with identification and reunification - which is why we pushed so hard for it in the first place, but it does not address the central question: Why are drivers required to stop for dogs, but not for cats? Until that question is answered, the welfare gap remains.

Not going to lie, this year hasn't been the greatest year. We've continued to be busy with cats, but personally we've been through a lot this year. Illness, death of friends & family, have all taken its toll, so checking the ICU fund hasn't been at the forefront of our minds.

But wow, you've smashed it.

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated to our ICU fund. There are just too many to thank individually on this post, but we've spoken and you know how much we appreciate your donations. To every single marathon runner, coin collector, families who asked for donations to us in memory of loved ones, bakers of cakes, children holding sales, & to those who gave anonymously, we thank each & everyone of you.

All donations for the rest of this year, including money raised at our Christmas event will continue to go towards that fund, although it well become something bigger and better. Watch this space...........

Furrever home Friday 🖤

Remember Areo? When this little boy was looking for a home, his wobbliness meant he needed someone willing to look beyond and give him the chance he deserved.

Thankfully, his perfect family came along, and it sounds like he’s well and truly landed on his paws! He’s now named Gus!

His owners wanted to give a cat a happier life and a second chance, but the moment they met him, they fell in love. His little wobbles only made him more special, and he’s settled in beautifully alongside their older kitten, Winnie, who took him under her wing from day one. The pair are now completely inseparable!

His family say that, although his disability brings a few little challenges, he’s completed their lives in every way. They adore his tiny squeal (he hasn’t quite mastered meowing!), his dribbles when he’s having cuddles, and the fact that he sleeps in their bed every night.

And perhaps the sweetest part of all is watching the beautiful bond he shares with Winnie.

We couldn’t be happier that this special boy has found his forever home. Thank you to his wonderful family for seeing past his wobbles and giving him the life he deserves. 🐾

We didn’t win the September grant round but the final round of 2026 has started!

The good thing for us is that the winners of the previous round have their votes reset - meaning we are now position #24.

My Giving Circle are giving 20 Grants just for UK and Europe charities. We just need to finish in the top 20 by December 30th!

Thank you to everyone who voted previously, let’s keep going to see if we can get this one 🤞🤞

Share this and help them win. It costs nothing.

Bellatrix, or Trixie, is a small, dainty and very sweet girl looking for a quiet home where she can settle and thrive.

She can be shy at first, but soon shows her lovely personality. She’s gentle, softly vocal and has the sweetest little squeaky hello. She loves catnip, playing and a good head bop.

Trixie is looking for an adult-only home without young children. She was briefly adopted but returned when the noise and activity of the household proved too much for her. She can become unsettled when things are loud, so a calm home with someone who understands her boundaries would be best.

She would also prefer to be the only cat. Although she has lived with another cat, she found sharing her space difficult.

Trixie enjoys going outdoors and is used to a cat flap, so a home with safe outdoor access would be ideal. She is clean, house proud and not fussy with her food.

Trixie is healthy and fully vaccinated, and is ready to find a peaceful, loving home where she can truly thrive.
