GRIMSTHORPE CASTLE CLOCKS UP 30 YEARS OF SUPPORT FOR THE NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME

Grimsthorpe Castle, near Bourne, celebrated 30 years of opening for the National Garden Scheme (NGS) in 2026. To mark the occasion, head gardener Emmy Tomkins and public access lead Maria Elsey were presented with a bronze sundial and certificate by Lincolnshire NGS County organiser Lesley Wykes.
The castle has opened its gates on selected dates on behalf of the NGS since 1988 and has raised more than £12,700 for the NGS.
Grimsthorpe Castle is one of 3,300 gardens in England and Wales open for the NGS.
In 2025 the NGS made an annual donation of over £3.8 million to nursing and health care charities. Its core beneficiaries include Carer’s Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, Parkinson’s UK and The Queen’s Institute of Community Nursing. It also provides health and grant bursaries to help community gardening projects.

The National Garden Scheme opens applications for its 2027 Community Garden Grants – generously supported by the Julia Rausing Trust – between Tuesday 29 September and Friday 30 October, 2026.

“The National Garden Scheme welcomes applications from projects that bring together people from different backgrounds and experiences, and from those that support disabled people or people living with long-term physical or mental health conditions. With all applications considered on their individual merits, awards between £1,500 and £5,000 will be granted,” says National Garden Scheme Chief Executive, Dr Richard Claxton.

“Please note that due to the popularity of the programme, once again, only the first 300 eligible applications will be considered, that’s why we are giving plenty of notice, allowing applicants to prepare their bids in good time.”
