Peace and Hope Concert Receives Standing Ovation
On Sunday 3 May, Saddleworth Musical Society presented a deeply moving concert, generously sponsored by the Illingworth family. The event paid tribute to the late Annie Illingworth and her husband David, both dedicated members of the Society, whose legacy continues to resonate within the choir today. Several members of the Illingworth family also took part in the performance, adding a poignant personal dimension to the occasion.
At the heart of the programme was The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace by Karl Jenkins—a powerful and thought-provoking work reflecting on the impact of conflict and the enduring human longing for peace. Originally composed in 1999, the piece remains strikingly relevant, its message of unity and hope resonating strongly with contemporary audiences.
The performance was met with a standing ovation, a testament to both the emotional depth of the music and the commitment of all those involved. It was an afternoon that not only honoured the memory of much-valued members, but also reaffirmed the unifying power of music in uncertain times.
