Physical activity should be at the heart of the NHS’s support for older people and is as important as providing medication, a report by the Health and Social Care Committee says.

Activity Alliance submitted evidence and was invited to give oral evidence, with our Chief Executive appearing alongside charity leaders to raise awareness of the barriers and give solutions.

Boosting resilience to illness, frailty and falls through physical activity will be key to keeping the country’s ageing population healthy and living independently for longer, MPs say. This change will be fundamental to the Government’s objective of switching the NHS’s focus from treating illness to preventing it, and will help stabilise the rising cost of funding the health service as demand continues to rise.

The report follows the cross-party Committee’s Healthy Ageing inquiry. It recommends:
- Advice and social prescribing of physical activity should become a core, routine offering to older people from their GPs and other clinicians.
- Stronger links between local NHS services with leisure providers and community groups to make exercise more accessible.
- The Care Quality Commission should be charged with checking that exercise programmes are being provided to residents in care homes.

We welcome the £1bn investment in PE and school sport announced yesterday by Government, and see a real opportunity to close the gap for disabled children. The announcement is an important step that can create lasting, positive change for disabled children and young disabled people.

To ensure more children can feel they belong in sports and activities, we look forward to seeing a joined-up approach that brings decision makers, providers, teachers and children together. We need to equip and train teachers, make inclusive PE a system priority and increase awareness campaigns to change attitudes.

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day ( ), and an opportunity to raise awareness about digital accessibility and inclusion.

There are approximately 17 million people with impairments and long-term health conditions in the UK. This is one in four of our population. The way in which some disabled people access communications may be different to non-disabled people. Some people need another way or experience ‘barriers’ to accessing information.

How we communicate as organisations and people is important. Understanding how to make your communications more accessible and inclusive to diverse audiences, including disabled people, will help you to reach more people.

Our inclusive communication eLearning course is designed to improve your knowledge and confidence delivering inclusive communication practices.

Learn what accessible and inclusive communications are and why they are important for reaching diverse audiences. Recognise how good communications overcome barriers, build trust, and comply with legal requirements such as the Equality Act 2010. Identify the diverse needs of disabled people by understanding the social model of disability and the barriers disabled people face in communications. Use principles of plain English, inclusive language, and accessible design (fonts, colours, imagery) to develop communication materials that are clear and engaging.

Lets all work together for a future where all disabled people feel they belong.

Today we hosted a Strategic Partner Network event in Birmingham with Sport For Confidence.

This network sits at the heart of our Include to Improve programme alongside our Lived Experience Network - bringing organisations and disabled people together to share good practice, challenge thinking, and co-create solutions that improve opportunities for disabled people to take part, volunteer and work in sport and physical activity.

Include to Improve is a two-year programme led by Activity Alliance and Sport for Confidence, funded by Sport England. The Strategic Partner Network is a group for organisations wanting to strengthen their commitment to disabled people’s inclusion in sport and physical activities.

Yesterday, Ashley Harris, our strategic partnership advisor for the South West, was in Parliament at the launch of the 'Beach Accessibility in the UK: Findings and Recommendations from the National Survey'.

The 40 page report from the Beach Access Project will provide detailed evidence that demonstrates the need to reimagine beach and blue space across the UK for disabled people.

Ashley said: "It was great for us to be in the room, alongside other organisations keen to improve accessibility and inclusivity for all to access beaches/blue spaces."

Disabled young people have shared their experiences - and the message is clear: the SEND system is not working.

A new report from the Disabled Children's Partnership and Kids shows that only 28% of disabled young people say they’re getting the right support at school or college.

That means missing out on:
- Learning
- Friendships
- Feeling included

This has to change. Families shouldn’t have to fight for support. Every child and young person deserves a system they can rely on.

The Inclusive Learning Principles are not a checklist or compliance exercise. They are a practical, flexible framework designed to support anyone creating, delivering or commissioning learning opportunities.

At their core is a simple yet transformative idea that learning works best when it works for everyone.

From embedding inclusion at the earliest stages of design, to ensuring content is shaped by lived experience the 10 principles provide clear, actionable prompts to help organisations:

- Design learning that is accessible by default, not by adjustment
- Create flexible experiences that reflect how people actually learn
- Use clear, inclusive language and imagery
- Build confidence, progression and real-world application
- Continuously listen, reflect and improve

Learning should work for everyone. That’s why we have worked alongside partners to launch new Inclusive Learning Principles to help make learning across sport and physical activity more accessible, flexible and inclusive. Because right now, too many disabled people face barriers to getting involved, progressing and leading.

These principles are here to change that.
- Designed with lived experience
- Practical and easy to apply
- Built for real-world impact

It’s time to rethink how we learn, so more people can belong. Check out the guide via our website:
