Beat Kidney Stones This Charity promotes and protects the health of sufferers of kidney stones and funds research into kidney stones.

Beat Kidney Stones promotes and protects the health of sufferers of kidney stones through the provision of financial assistance, support, education and practical advice and to advance knowledge in all areas relating to kidney stones by funding research into kidney stones. The inspiration for starting this charity was Margaret who passed 47 kidney stones in 29 years. Even after being diagnosed with terminal cancer Margaret still had a last kidney stone to pass.

Raising awareness matters because only a small part of what all kidney stone sufferers experience is known. The most hurtful is the dozens of comments I have received along the lines of, it is only like a bad headache!

Jenny a new kidney stone sufferer, rang last night asking, what could she do to stop herself from creating another kidney stone. She was so shocked that a medicine was not available to stop another kidney stone forming. Jenny said a friend had given her our phone number 01395276672 and I suggested she talks to her friends about her experiences and this would raise awareness.

Reassurance! To be receiving emails from salespeople is good in that Beat Kidney Stones is becoming more widely known and more people are learning about kidney stone pain. However to get repeated requests to purchase is wasting our time. What stops them are an answer along the lines, thank you for your offer of donating your service to this Charity (RCN 1170678) No donations received yet and no more emails.

A repeating kidney stones sufferer made a very good point last night that is well worth repeating. “Understandably we all make donations to charities that are close to our hearts but if a small percentage was also sent to Beat Kidney Stones then every donor who did this would know those donations would be paying for research and not paying Directors salaries and pension contributions.

According to Facebook, about two thirds of the people who read these posts are ladies. What is odd, twice their number of men get stones. What on earth does that indicate? Ladies, does it endorse your long held beliefs? Perhaps further proof, this writer is a bloke and had not noticed this point for months!

I was talking to a Researcher yesterday and he had been disappointed and frustrated when his funding request had been turned down. Then by chance he had been talking to a Sales and Marketing Executive who said, a funding set back is something to overcome, to think about and devise a way forward. He did and many months later he received his funding. His new application was slightly different and with hindsight a better application. I hope this comment helps other Researchers.

Beat Kidney Stones is receiving many offers each week offering us services. Ranging from, how to improve our web site to finding suitable fund raising employees. Beat Kidney Stones is run by volunteers so the pressure of raising donations to pay fund raisers and Director salaries does not exist. Consequently our fund raising does not exist, we just rely on kind people donating, for our part, we do not contact or repeatedly contact the same donors. Plus, every penny received is allocated towards research.

After being asked yesterday if talking about kidney stone experiences helps I googled word of mouth and found the following:
“Word-of-mouth is extraordinarily effective, with research showing that 88% to 92% of consumers trust recommendations from friends and family over all other forms of advertising. It is widely considered the most valuable form of marketing, with studies indicating it can be 2 to 10 times more effective than paid advertising.“
Talking about kidney stones experiences will not have the same effect as a recommendation but even so, word of mouth is very effective.

When meeting a new experience, we all relate the new experience to something similar we have already experienced. I was trying to describe the pain levels to someone months ago and she asked, is it like giving birth? I said, kidney stone pain often causes sufferers to lose consciousness.

Decision makers tend to be experts with diverse experiences but if they do not know of, or are not stone sufferers they are just members of the public who need to understand passing kidney stones is extremely painful. So please tell people you meet about kidney stones and how painful they are. You might be the person whose message gets through and is the cause of funding break through research.

To answer yesterday’s question in the Comment. Our name is Beat Kidney Stones so funding research into how to measure pain would not be possible. However, if kidney stone sufferers said yes fund it, then we would.
