This year, 68% of carers have had to cut back on hobbies and leisure activities, up from 58% in 2023 and 47% in 2022.

Even more worrying, 60% of carers have reduced time spent with family and friends—up from 47% in 2023 and just 34% in 2022.

With loneliness already a significant challenge for many carers, these cuts are making an already difficult situation worse.

Meet Ian and his two sons!

For years, Ian faced a constant battle advocating for the care his sons needed. Both sons, now in their late 20s, have ADHD, with one recently diagnosed as autistic and the other with a learning disability. Despite Ian's tireless efforts, it took 11 years to secure an autism assessment!

A turning point came when Ian learned about Direct Payments, that allowed him to hire a personal assistant with a psychology background for his sons. “I cannot tell you how much of an improvement this has made,” Ian shares.

On Carers Rights Day, we’re shining a light on the importance of recognising carers' rights. Like Ian, all carers deserve access to the knowledge and tools that can make their caring journey more manageable.

At Carers Network, we stand with unpaid carers, ensuring they’re supported and empowered to make informed decisions about the care of their loved ones!

💡 Learn more about Direct Payments and the rights available to carers at one of the workshops we’re hosting today and tomorrow. Check out the full programme on our feed!

Did you know? 👇

As a carer, you have rights!

We want all carers to feel confident in advocating for themselves, whether at work, in education, or while accessing health and social care services.

That’s why every year, for Carers Rights Day, we run a programme of online and in-person workshops to empower unpaid carers. This year, the sessions will cover key topics such as housing rights and responsibilities for carers, strategies for managing energy bills, navigating benefits and financial assistance, and direct payments!

Carers Rights Day is next week, Thursday 21 November, but we’ll have 3 days of workshops and activities for carers to mark the day, starting from Wednesday 20 November!

📣 How do we help carers? Let Ainsley tell you!

Ainsley has been looking after his 92-year-old mum, Winnifred, since 2008 – but it wasn’t until a hospital referral in 2020 that he connected with Carers Network.

“Carers Network has helped me set up a power of attorney for my mum and apply for attendance allowance. Mum’s care package has transformed our lives. She’s happy at home and can still join her faith groups online – such a comfort to us both.

Carers Network has been a great help with general advice. It’s reassuring to know they’re there. I can pop into their office or reach them by phone or email whenever I need support.”

Through Carers Network, Ainsley has the guidance and resources to make caring for his mum more manageable.

Are you caring for someone in the last phase of their life?

At Carers Network, we empathise and can offer practical guidance at this difficult time.

When your loved one is approaching the end of their life, there may be issues for them, but also for you in your caring role. This might include discussing how and where they are cared for, coordinating health and financial affairs as well as declaring any specific wishes.

We aim to provide support that will assist adult unpaid carers to undertake their caring in a least stressful way as possible.

Contact us to find out more, and we’ll put you in touch with Dolores, our End of Life Carers Project Manager.

“When my mother’s health deteriorated, I became her full time carer. A neighbour and fellow unpaid carer who had been dealing with Carers Network advised me to get in touch with them.

Carers Network helped me apply for Attendance Allowance for my mum and Carer’s Allowance for me. They also helped me register my Power of Attorney.
I wouldn’t have been able to do all this without them.

I am very grateful for the support I received from Carers Network and am now in a better position to care for my mum.” - Local carer

If you care for an adult who lives in Westminster, Hammersmith and Fulham, or Kensington and Chelsea, get in touch with us and start accessing the support you deserve.
