Southsea Common Promenade Re-design

We hope you’ve had a chance to get down to the seafront since it reopened a couple of weeks ago. With the sunshine, the Easter bank holiday, major events and the launch of the new sea defences all happening together, it’s been especially busy.

Unsurprisingly, there’s been a lot of chat about the new layout – from the one‑way system to the parking and signage. The Coastal Defence team have put together a helpful blog on the Southsea Coastal Defence website that explains why these changes were made, how they reflect public feedback, and what happens next now the area is open.

The team are also keen to hear your views on the newly opened area. There’s a short survey where you can share your thoughts – the Frontage 3 survey is open until 6pm on Thursday 30 April 2026

Part of the coastal path will close next week for an upgrade.

A section of the coastal path at Milton Common will be temporarily closed from Tuesday 14 April while resurfacing work is carried out as part of the North Portsea Coastal Scheme.

The path is being improved with a more durable surface to make it safer to use once reopened.

The path will be closed until the end of May, weather permitting. There are signed diversion routes are in place and available on site.

Thank you for your patience while this work is completed.

Some of bicycle-friendly cities’ most fervent opponents are drivers who believe cyclists impede their daily commute and make any car trip longer and more complicated. But adding bike lines and sidewalks to busy corridors can actually be good for drivers.

Toole Design recently posted an article about the ways cycling and cycling infrastructure positively affects drivers including causing:

✔️Less traffic and shorter travel times
✔️Fewer crashes
✔️Fewer cyclists in the way of traffic
✔️More transportation options for those who cannot drive (children, the elderly and people of disabilities) thus less chauffeuring for those who do drive
✔️A stronger local economy

Anything you think they didn’t consider?

And if you want to help improve things further, help us campaign for cycling infrastructure across the whole city that is safe, connected and consistent.
