Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is a new way for sole traders and landlords to report their income and expenses to HMRC.

From 6 April 2026, some sole traders and landlords must use it, based on their total annual income from self-employment and property.

You, or your agent if you have one, will need to use software that works with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax to:
Create, store and correct digital records of your self-employment and property income and expenses.
Send your quarterly updates to HMRC.
Submit your tax return by 31 January the following year.
The government has set out plans to introduce legislation to require customers to submit their tax return through their Making Tax Digital for Income Tax software.

New Grant Launched

The UKSPF Herefordshire Research and Development Grant has opened for expressions of interest.

The UKSF Herefordshire Research and Development Grant is a revenue grant scheme funded through Herefordshire Council's UK Shared Prosperity Fund allocation for 2025/6.

The aim of the grant is to help Herefordshire businesses to:

Engage in new markets
Develop new products and services for the market
Adopt new technologies and processes (to the business) leading to more and better paid jobs and improving productivity, creating a more resilient and competitive business community
How much you can apply for:

Revenue grants are available for businesses, for up to 75% of total eligible project costs

Minimum grant £5,000 - project costs must be at least £6,666
Maximum grant £24,999 - project costs must be at least £33,333 (a higher grant may be considered in exceptional circumstances)
Start-up businesses trading less than 12 months, but more than 6 months, maximum grant is £10,000 (project costs must therefore be at least £13,334)
Who can apply:

Businesses physically trading and located in Herefordshire
Businesses that have been actively trading for more than six months
All sectors, excluding businesses involved with primary production (farmers)
Deadlines:

For your initial proposal to be considered you must submit an expression of interest form as soon as possible, and before midnight on Sunday 20th July 2025.
