April is Stress Awareness Month, and this year’s theme — — reflects exactly why Serving Our Superheroes exists.
For the past 6 years, we have been providing essential toiletries to those who need them most.
What started with supporting hospitals has grown to reach:
• People experiencing homelessness
• Individuals and families fleeing domestic abuse
• Schools and foodbanks during the cost of living crisis
• Communities through our school pantries, which we regularly stock
• Ongoing work to end period poverty
Over the years, we have worked alongside In Kind Direct, Clean Conscience, and Toiletries Amnesty to help create a circular economy; saving essential toiletries from going to waste and redistributing them to people who need them most.
We are incredibly proud that our founder, Sarah, received a Community Champion Award from Toiletries Amnesty in 2023 and a Green Apple Environment Award in 2025, recognising both the social and environmental impact of this work.
Every day, we see the reality behind the statistics — and the stress hygiene poverty creates.
According to In Kind Direct’s 2025 research, 9.2 million adults in the UK — around 1 in 6 — are living in hygiene poverty. Even more concerning, 12% of adults expect to go without hygiene products for the rest of the year because they simply cannot afford them.
This is not just about unemployment.
61% of those affected are in work, and 40% are in full-time employment.
Children are being deeply impacted too:
• 1.1 million children in Great Britain are living in hygiene poverty
• 845,000 children are missing school because of it
• 21% avoid playing with others due to fear of judgement
• Nearly 1 in 10 have been bullied
No child should feel ashamed because they don’t have access to basic hygiene.
And period poverty remains a critical issue:
• 21% of women and people who menstruate (around 2.8 million people) struggle to afford period products
• 14% have missed work due to their period
• 13% have missed school, college or university
• 40% of girls have had to use toilet roll because they couldn’t afford proper products
The stress this creates is constant and corrosive.
It’s the stress of wondering how others will see you.
The stress of choosing between heating, eating, and hygiene.
The stress of sending your child to school without what they need.
The stress of managing a period without dignity.
At Serving Our Superheroes, we don’t just provide products — we provide relief from that stress, restoring dignity, confidence, and hope.
This Stress Awareness Month, we will continue to — because no one should have to face the daily stress of not being able to afford the basics.
