Birkbeck Climate Network

Birkbeck Climate Network The Climate network is a group of passionate staff & students who believe in social & climate justice

Birkbeck university still holds investments in a number of fossil fuel companies. We, as students feel that at this time and age, with climate change making the headlines and countries committing to net-zero targets, we feel that an institution like Birkbeck needs to come aboard. We are part of the global campaign led by People and the Planet that aim to get institutions and cities to divest from

the fossil fuel industry and reinvest in renewable energy/green technology. Many institutions have committed to divest from fossil fuel with currently over half of universities in the U.K that have taken a stance to divest from fossil fuel companies. Back in 2012, People and the Planet have started campaigning and putting in place a student-led network to bring awareness that investing and profiting from activities that drive climate change and is set against the university's reputation and achievements in regards to sustainability and its commitment to sustainable practices. Whether we are students, staff, members of the administration... we believe we are all storytellers, and we have the responsibility to lead the conversation and create transparency in matters that concern us like environmental concerns. People & Planet estimates that Birkbeck has approximately £220,000 invested in fossil fuel companies. However, without greater transparency and disclosure from the College, we cannot be sure of the full extent of the College’s investments in fossil fuels’
In addition to complete divestment from fossil fuel companies, we demand greater transparency on the university's assets and a commitment to meet standards for a greater sustainable life for students altogether. SOS's UK research report shows concern amongst students is still 10% above the UK population general. Their global 2020 Survey had almost 7000 responses and the report shows that students around the world are concerned about climate change and want to see this reflected in their education. In our opinion, divesting from fossil fuels is the only way forwards for a university that prides itself on being a leader in scientific research, with committing to a more sustainable approach on how assets are distributed. It would only be the right thing to ask the university to be a public advocate for divestment and show the way by publishing a statement on ethical investment. Committing to reinvest these funds to alternatives and greener energies with clearer transparency on how funds are used is where the campaign is leading us, and we will be taking you along the way! Hi all, I hope that you can make it to this cost of living event on the 15th. There's also an Open Cost of Living letter that you can sign as a show of solidarity. https://linktr.ee/GNDBirkbeck

As Mr Frost, put's his spindly, withered, clammy hands about us...we need all solidarity to keep body and soul together.

I was at the CWU rally today in London, and they were in no doubt as to who is to blame for the current crisis, and it's not migrants, other workers, the unemployed, etc.

My group, the Climate Change Network, believes that you cannot fight climate change, if you do not address social justice.

For far to long, the university, has been allowed to view international students as cash cows, with teats to be ruthlessly milked, yet it also remains indifferent to how they otherwise survive

Join our network to ask Birkbeck to commit to a Green New Deal
