St Mary’s Students’ Union is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Terry Bhogal (Docherty).
Terry was a much-valued part of the St Mary’s community and worked closely with the Students’ Union for many years. She worked at St Mary’s for 26 years before leaving the University in 2020, following many years of dedicated service. In her role within Health and Safety, she played an important part in making sure student activity could take place safely.
She was a huge supporter of the Union and its activity, particularly during key moments like Summer Ball, Freshers’ Week and Simmstock. She was also a familiar face at the elections count each year.
Terry supported the Union across a wide range of activity, always making sure events were delivered safely. She was someone staff and student leaders could turn to, especially during key moments, and her calm, practical approach made a real difference.
She cared deeply about the student experience, which was recognised by the Students’ Union in 2015 when she was awarded Honorary Life Membership.
The University will be commemorating Terry’s life and contribution to St Mary’s in the coming weeks, with further details to be shared in due course.
James Turnbull, CEO of St Mary’s Students’ Union, said:
“I had the privilege of working alongside Terry and saw first-hand the care and commitment she brought to her role. She was always there when it mattered, often going above and beyond to support students and staff. I know many Union staff and sabbatical officers will hold very fond memories and stories of working with her. She played a big part in helping the Union deliver activity safely and with confidence, and she will be greatly missed.”
Her impact on the Students’ Union and the wider St Mary’s community will not be forgotten.
The Students’ Union’s thoughts are with Terry’s family, friends and colleagues at this incredibly difficult time.
