Very frustratingly, the Premiership Women’s Rugby Final has been scheduled at short notice for The Stoop on 28 June. This means that we must cancel the Summer Singers’ Night we had scheduled for that night. We regret the inconvenience, but ask that those performers missing out on 28 June continue to rehearse their pair of songs and be extra-fabulous at our season-closing singaround on 12 July.

British blues-meister Dave Kelly makes a welcome TwickFolk return on 21 June. He’s worked with all the legends on both sides of the Atlantic and still regularly tours with his own band and with Paul Jones, but he’ll be providing a virtuoso solo performance, full of choppy riffs and blurred bottleneck, just for us. Be aware, this gig was originally scheduled for 31 May and had to be moved. Tickets bought for the original date are good for 21 June. And while Hatful of Rain take a well-earned break, their bass man Phil Jones is out on the road on his own and takes the support slot.

Dave Kelly is a true legend of British Blues, having been a leading light on the scene since becoming lead singer and guitarist with the John Dummer Blues Band in the late 1960's. Dave has worked with many of his heroes, including John Lee Ho**er, Son House and Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells,...

Featured in the second set of Sunday’s double-header is longtime TwickFolk favourite Simon O'Grady. He’s launching ‘Stop Frame Animation’, the splendid album he recorded recently with regular sideman, banjoist Tim White. Simon’s a wry, observational songwriter – the album’s title track depicts a relationship breaking down frame by frame, but he also sings of pupils ignoring their teacher and the joy of hearing church bells. Sunday’s double-header features two local songwriters. David Collins Music takes the first set. An accomplished singer, guitarist and storyteller, his recent album ‘Sundown’ highlights his talents. He selects interesting subjects to write about – a young man leaving for war, the fight against the enclosure of Epping Forest – and is equally selective about others’ work he covers, like Ewan McColl and Peggy Seeger’s ‘The Father’s Song’. Expect a few distinct reinterpretations of traditional songs too. Tickets link in comments below.

Katie Spencer was on exceedingly fine form last night. Her rich vibrato voice, her impressive fretwork, her articulate, heartfelt songs and her thoughtful introductions combined to create a very special evening. It’s been 30 months since she was last with us, and we’re definitely not going to let it go as long next time. If you don’t have all three of her albums, if you haven’t seen her live, you’re missing out.
