CALLOUT

At 9.46am on Tuesday 16 June 2026, Belfast Coastguard activated the crew pagers to assist a yacht with two persons onboard with machinery problems approaching Troon harbour.

The volunteer crew assembled at the lifeboat station and Shannon class RNLI lifeboat ‘RNLB Roy Barker VI’ launched to assess the situation.

After arriving on scene, and following consultation with those onboard, a lifeboat crew member was transferred to the yacht, and a tow was established back to Troon harbour.

On entering the harbour, staff from Troon Yacht Haven were able to assist berthing the yacht which was then met in the marina by the Ayr Coastguard Rescue Team.

The all-weather lifeboat then returned to station where it was made ready for service with the assistance of the shore crew.

Open Day 2026

Have you ever wondered how it feels to be a member of a volunteer RNLI lifeboat crew? Or just what happens on a lifeboat callout?

Well, there’s an opportunity to see behind the scenes at the lifeboat station, on Saturday 18 July 2026 from 11am until 4pm, as our station opens its doors to the public for our annual Open Day.

See our RNLI Shannon class all-weather 'RNLB Roy Barker VI' and D class inshore lifeboat 'Sheena' and meet our volunteer crew. You’ll be able to ask all your questions about the invaluable work our crews do and just what it takes to face the elements.

See inside the lifeboat station, try on some kit in the crew room and see the history of the lifeboat station. There will also be RNLI gifts on sale by our retail volunteers, a BBQ from Troon Round Table and our RNLI fundraisers will be hosting raffles in their Tea Room.

On the quayside there will representatives from other local emergency services including HM Coastguard, Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service. (operational demands permitting)

Joining them will be 154 (Scottish) Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, the Scottish Fire Heritage Trust, Troon First Responders and the Police Scotland Youth Volunteers.

Hope to see you there!

CALLOUT

Our newest inshore lifeboat helm didn’t have to wait long for her first callout as on Saturday 30 May 2026 at 5.39pm Belfast Coastguard activated the crew pagers for an incident at Ayr Harbour.

With pagers sounding the volunteer crew attended at the lifeboat station and RNLI D class inshore lifeboat ‘Sheena’ was launched with Jenn Tweedie in command.

As the lifeboat was approaching Ayr, Belfast Coastguard updated the crew that the assistance of the inshore lifeboat was no longer required with other services now in attendance.

The lifeboat was then able to return to Troon where it was made ‘ready for service’ with the assistance of the shore crew.

CALLOUTS

As the temperatures increased and more people made their way to the Ayrshire coast, the volunteer lifeboat crew at Troon RNLI lifeboat station were kept busy this week.

Their first callout came at 2.13pm on Tuesday 26 May 2026 following reports of jet skiers in difficulty at Stevenston point. With Police and Coastguard team assisting on the shore, Troon RNLI all-weather lifeboat ‘RNLB Roy Barker VI’ was launched and soon located the jet skiers. The casualties were given initial casualty care before being taken to Ardrossan harbour where they were met by ambulance and the Coastguard Team.

On Wednesday 27 May 2026 at 5.53pm, the volunteers were alerted to paddleboarders in difficulty off Prestwick. RNLI D class inshore lifeboat ‘Sheena’ was soon launched and were able to assist the paddleboarders back to the beach into the care of the Coastguard.

At 3.47pm on Thursday 28 May 2026, the pagers were once again activated by Belfast Coastguard following reports of 3 children in difficulty on inflatables at Ayr. The Shannon class all-weather lifeboat ‘RNLB Roy Barker VI’ was launched to the scene, but thankfully the crew were informed by the Coastguard on route the children were back safely ashore. The lifeboat crew were able to recover the inflatables before returning to Troon where the all weather lifeboat was made ‘ready for service’ with the assistance of the shore crew.

Troon RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager Jim Redmond said: “Following the recent good weather the coast is becoming busier and our advice would be for anyone going out onto the water to please wear a suitable flotation device, check the weather and tides and ensure you have a means of calling for help should you get into difficulty.'

‘We would also advise not to use inflatables in the sea – please save them for the pool and if you do see someone in trouble at sea or along the coast, please call 999 and ask for Coastguard.

New Helm for Troon RNLI

Congratulations to our volunteer crew member Jenn Tweedie who has recently passed out as a D class inshore lifeboat helm.

Following training and assessment Jenn, who had been a RNLI volunteer at Troon for 4 years, was put through her paces by our RNLI trainer / assessor Alistair Young.

After passing this final assessment, Jenn is now qualified to take command of our RNLI D class inshore lifeboat ‘Sheena’ on exercise and on callouts.

Jenn has also nearly completed her own Mayday mile challenge for the RNLI as a way of giving even more back to the lifesaving service she’s part of.

Please show your support for Jenn and help smash her fundraising target: https://fundraise.rnli.org/fundraisers/jennifertweedie/mayday-mile

CALLOUT

On Friday 22 May 2026, the pagers were activated at 2.38pm by Belfast Coastguard alerting the volunteer lifeboat crew to a 14m fishing vessel with a fouled propeller in a position approximately 7 miles south west of Troon.

After the crew assembled at the lifeboat station, the RNLI Shannon class all-weather lifeboat 'Roy Barker VI' was launched to assess the situation.

On arrival and following an assessment of the situation, with no life at risk, the lifeboat crew updated Belfast Coastguard. A decision was made that the lifeboat would standby the fishing vessel until a tug arrived on scene to assist.

With a tug on route from Troon, the lifeboat remained on scene and once a tow was established by the tug the lifeboat was able to return to station where it was made 'ready for service' with the assistance of the shore crew.
