🌟 Remembering “I Have a Dream” – 28 August 1963 🌟

On this day in 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered one of the most famous and powerful speeches in history, sharing his dream of a world where people would be judged not by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character.

More than six decades later, his words continue to remind us of the importance of kindness, equality, inclusion and looking out for one another.

At Totnes Caring, we see every day how much can be achieved when people come together and care for their community. Our wonderful volunteers give their time, friendship and support to others helping people feel connected, valued and included. ❤️

Perhaps that is something worth remembering this Bank Holiday weekend: small acts of kindness can make a very big difference.

🎶💚 Memory Café – Thursday 27 August 💚🎶

We’re looking forward to another lovely afternoon at our Memory Café tomorrow, and we’re especially delighted to welcome Kitty Stewart from , who will be entertaining us with some wonderful live music. 🎵

Singer songwriter and ukulele musician, Kitty Stewart bridges the borders of contemporary folk and comedy-pop with soulful vocals and a captivating stage presence - so we’re sure it’s going to be a very special afternoon. 💚

Come along and enjoy some music, refreshments, friendship and a warm welcome from the Totnes Caring team.

💖 Remembering the wonderful Dolly Parton 💖

Today we are remembering an extraordinary woman who brought so much joy, laughter, music, kindness and generosity to the world.

Dolly Parton was, of course, a true musical legend – a phenomenal songwriter, singer and performer whose songs have been loved by generations. But her legacy reaches far beyond music.

What made Dolly so special was the enormous heart behind the rhinestones. ✨ She used her success to help others, quietly and generously, supporting countless charitable causes and creating her Imagination Library, which has given hundreds of millions of books to children around the world.

She showed us that you can be hugely successful without ever losing sight of where you came from – and that kindness, compassion and generosity can make an extraordinary difference to other people's lives.

At Totnes Caring, we know how much small acts of kindness and giving your time to others can mean, and Dolly was a wonderful example of just how far that spirit can reach.

Thank you, Dolly, for the music, the laughter, the wisdom, the sparkle and, above all, the kindness. 🌟

What a legacy. What a lady. What a life. ❤️

🏡 We’re looking for Home Help Bank Staff! 💚

Could you spare some time to help local people stay independent and comfortable in their own homes?

We’re looking to build our Home Help bank team at Totnes Caring – people who can provide occasional cover when our regular Home Help staff are away on holiday, off sick or otherwise unavailable.

This is not a regular set-hours role – it’s an opportunity to join our bank of Home Help staff and work when you’re available and when additional cover is needed.

Our Home Help service provides practical support with things such as light housework, shopping and other everyday household tasks, helping our clients to remain independent in their own homes.

We’re looking for reliable, caring and friendly people who enjoy helping others and can offer some flexibility when cover is needed.

• Flexible, occasional work
• The chance to make a real difference to local people
• Support from the Totnes Caring team
• The opportunity to become part of a friendly local charity

🧡 Celebrating Our Older Community 🧡

Today is Global Senior Citizens Day, so it is a lovely opportunity to celebrate the older people who are such an important part of our community.

At Totnes Caring, we know that growing older is about so much more than the number of candles on your birthday cake. It's about a lifetime of experiences, stories, friendships, skills, humour and memories – and the contribution that older people continue to make to the communities around them.

Every day, we see the difference that connection and companionship can make. Whether it's sharing a cuppa at one of our groups, enjoying an activity at the Memory Café, having a chat with a befriender, or simply having someone there to lend a helping hand, staying connected really matters.

So today, we're celebrating all the wonderful older people in our community – and the families, friends, volunteers and neighbours who help make later life happier, healthier and more connected.

Here's to the stories, laughter, wisdom and friendships that make our community what it is. 🧡

🧡 Could you lend a helping hand? 🧡

We're looking for Home Helps to join our bank team and provide practical support to older people in our local community.

This is a paid role and offers flexibility, allowing you to let us know when you are available and take on visits that fit around your other commitments.

Our Home Helps provide practical assistance with everyday household tasks, while also offering a friendly and reassuring presence to the people they support. It's rewarding work where you can make a genuine difference to someone's day and help people remain independent in their own homes.

We're looking for people who are reliable, caring, friendly and happy to help. Previous experience isn't necessarily essential as what matters most is having the right attitude and a genuine desire to support others.

🏠🧡 Sometimes a little support can make all the difference 🧡

As we get older, there can be times when everyday household tasks become a little more difficult than they once were.

That's where our Home Help service can lend a helping hand.

Our friendly Home Helps provide practical support with everyday jobs around the home, helping older people to stay independent and comfortable in their own surroundings.

It might be a little help with the housework, changing the bed, laundry or other household tasks – but it's also about having a friendly, familiar face to pop in and knowing that someone is there to help.

If you, a family member, friend or neighbour could benefit from some extra support at home, please get in touch with Totnes Caring to find out more about our Home Help service.

You don't have to manage everything on your own. Sometimes, a little help can make life that bit easier. 🧡

🧡 Volunteer Spotlight – Thank You, Hania! 🧡

This Friday, we're shining the spotlight on one of our wonderful Memory Café volunteers, Hania.

Every Thursday, Hania is busy behind the scenes in the kitchen, making sure there is a constant supply of tea, coffee and biscuits for everyone who comes along to our Memory Café. ☕🍪

Working alongside Mary, she keeps everyone topped up, happy and well looked after – and does so with such warmth, care and good humour.

Since our much-loved Wendy recently moved away to be closer to her family, Hania and Mary have been working especially hard to keep everything running smoothly in the kitchen, and we really couldn't do it without them.

It's often the little things that make such a big difference, and having a friendly face ready with a cuppa and a biscuit is certainly one of them! 🧡

So, from all of us at Totnes Caring and everyone who enjoys our Memory Café, thank you, Hania, for all that you do. Your time, care and hard work are hugely appreciated.

And of course, a big thank you to Mary too! 🧡☕
