Spring is here, and it’s time to start this year’s whole school production at Chagford Primary school.
We started this project in 2022 in the wake of Covid. Lots of anxious children, schools refusers, non-readers, and non-speakers. All shaken by the uncertainty of the pandemic.
Ben Davis, Crispin Whittell, Head Teacher Ed Finch and some other front-footed folk from the Chagford community, decided that what the children needed was a play, to bring everyone together again. To remind us that creativity breeds positivity, motivation, confidence and joy.
By the time our play was ready to perform, many children who had struggled to focus or read in class, performed whole unabridged Shakespearean monologues. Children who hadn’t been able to get through the school door on day one, were able to perform in front of an audience of 100s, hit cues and remember complex directions.
We wrote poetry together, invented characters, learned spells, created costumes, music, lyrics, puppets and props.
Chagford Primary School is a state funded Academy, with the same financial challenges as any other.
But its community is its strength. Instead of waiting around for the incumbent government to start funding the arts, which had been systematically stripped from the core curriculum curriculum, the community worked together to raise the funds needed to provide 30 days worth of arts provision, integrated into the school day, all geared towards pulling together an incredible whole school production, and I was incredibly privileged to deliver the project.
This project isn’t just ‘a nice play’ or icing on the cake. This project is a carefully designed Literacy and Oracy Programme which promotes confidence, collaboration and joy. It is exceptionally inclusive and tailored to the individual needs of each student. It brings music, singing, speaking & listing and team work into sharp focus and boosts the skill set and confidence of everyone involved.
Any school could do this. Does yours?
