Losing your sight, should not lead to losing your independence. One of our top priorities here at Devon in Sight is to ensure those living with sight loss

Please help support this project 🙏

Hi Besties, we need your help 💪

Without funds we will not be able to run this year. Whatever you can spare will make all the difference.

The Pride Team is very small and all of us are volunteers, nobody takes a salary. We always do our best to keep costs down and to offer a free event for all to enjoy but unfortunately this year those costs have steeply risen 😔

Whether its donating, taking out a corporate sponsorship or buying tickets to our fundraisers - we need you ❤️

For full transparency, here are our costs:
Medical - £2,600
Security - £5,500
Sanitation & Fencing - £7,500
Entertainment - £7,000
Marquees - £2,000
Stage & Lighting - £8,500
Road Closures - £4,200
Insurances - £1,200
Total: £38,500

I never realised that live closed captioning was a thing. At least not on Zoom.

Today I learned something new thanks to someone who uses live captions as he has a hearing impairment.

It was a proper lightbulb moment 💡

Live captions on Zoom can make meetings, training sessions and 1-2-1s far more inclusive. They help people who are hard of hearing, neurodivergent, joining from noisy environments, or who simply process information better when they can read as well as listen.

How to turn on live captions in Zoom

• Join a Zoom meeting
• Look at the bottom toolbar
• Click CC or Live Transcript
• Select Enable Auto-Transcription
• Captions will appear on screen in real time

You can also adjust caption size in Settings to make them easier to read.

It’s such a small action, yet it can make a massive difference to someone’s experience.

Today was a good reminder that accessibility isn’t complicated. Sometimes it’s just about knowing what’s already available and choosing to use it.

I appreciate that I may well be talking to the converted, but I hope you will indulge me when I purely want to educate others about what I’ve learnt, especially if it helps them too.

I’m also very well aware that people reading this will have a visual impairment, but I know that it may helot many who have some sight to make the zoom experience even better.

🌻 Not all disabilities are visible…

You may have seen someone wearing a sunflower lanyard in a shop, on public transport, or at an event — but not realised what it means.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower 🌻 is a subtle yet powerful way for people to indicate they have a non-visible disability — and may need a little extra patience, time, or understanding.

This could include conditions like:
• Visual impairment or blindness
• Autism
• Chronic pain
• Hearing loss
• Mental health challenges
• Learning difficulties
• And many more

Wearing the sunflower doesn’t require any explanation — it simply helps create a more considerate and inclusive world.

Given that this group is made up of people living with visual impairments, I know how important it is to feel seen, respected, and supported — even when the challenges you face aren’t obvious to others.

💬 Even though you may have a cane 🦯, I know that some people simply ignore it when you walk towards them, so having a lanyard too might be of help.

I know you are not asking for special treatment — just for awareness.

When we saw this post elsewhere, it really made us smile in a very positive way.

Some people judge others by their life hurdles (we have been on the receiving end and have the T-shirt), and it was disgraceful to read some of the outright vile comments posted, just because the trolls 🧌 think it’s funny to point fingers and make fun of someone.

Everyone deserves a chance, and we congratulate Virgin Australia 🇦🇺 for helping this young lady to achieve her work experience in the way they did, as well as to Alle herself for standing up and doing something positive in her life.

🌟 ❤️A Story of Determination and Heart

When Alle Sayers first joined Virgin Australia through a work experience program, it was meant to be temporary. But what no one expected was how quickly she would light up every room she walked into. With her bright smile, tireless work ethic, and genuine love for people, Alle didn’t just do her job—she inspired everyone around her.

Her positivity and commitment touched her colleagues so deeply that Virgin Australia offered her a permanent job as a receptionist. For Alle, it was more than a job—it was proof that her unique talents and spirit truly mattered.

And her journey didn’t stop there. She proudly represented her airline at the World Down Syndrome Congress in Brisbane, showing the world the power of inclusion, courage, and opportunity.

Alle’s story reminds us: when we open doors for one another, we don’t just change lives—we change the world.

The Torbay Social Club for the Blind & Visually Impaired is more than a place to meet.

It’s a space where friendships are formed, stories are shared, laughter is common and everyone is welcomed as they are. For many, it’s a highlight of the week and a reminder that no one is on their own.

Whether you’ve been attending for years, recently joined, help behind the scenes, or are simply following along to learn more, you are part of our wider community.

New members are always welcome, and we’re proud of the supportive, friendly environment that continues to grow.
