Safe Anaesthesia Worldwide - SAWW

Safe Anaesthesia Worldwide - SAWW Safe Anaesthesia Worldwide (Reg Charity 1148254) provides anaesthesia to those in need in low-income countries to to enable life-saving surgery.

Around 5 billion people worldwide lack access to surgical and anaesthetic care. This means emergency operations cannot be performed and patients do not receive the treatment they urgently need. This results in suffering, disability and death. Safe Anaesthesia Worldwide (SAWW) saves lives and relieves suffering by providing appropriate anaesthetic equipment and training that is urgently needed by p

eople in poor countries. SAWW works to redress this huge inequality in anaesthesia provision in the following ways:
By supplying anaesthetic equipment that is suitable for use in developing countries to hospitals in need. We only provide equipment that is safe, effective and inexpensive to use. By training medical and technical staff in poor countries to safely deliver anaesthesia and keep the anaesthetic equipment in good working order. By supporting research into ways of improving the safe delivery of anaesthesia in developing countries. We work closely with local hospitals and staff to ensure we supply precisely what is needed.

Thank you to everyone who supported our appeal for Nepal. CPAP equipment donated by SAWW to Chaurjahari Hospital, a remote rural hospital, was used to save the lives of pre-term twins born at 35 weeks gestation with respiratory distress.

"Our facility successfully managed the delivery and neonatal care of twin infants born at 35 weeks gestation, weighing 1900g and 2200g respectively. Both neonates presented with respiratory distress post-delivery, necessitating the use of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) support. Additionally, one infant required phototherapy for the management of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Following a one-week course of treatment, both infants were discharged in stable condition. The availability of CPAP technology continues to be a critical factor in our ability to provide life-saving care and expand our capacity for preterm admissions."

One of the best ways to help SAWW is to organise a fundraising event. This might mean holding an enjoyable and fun event with your friends and family, or it might mean deciding to take on a sponsored personal challenge that you've always wanted to achieve! Let us know you plans and we do our best to assist.
Shane Martin raised over Β£600 for SAWW in Tough Mudder challenges to supply vital oxygen equipment to patients in Uganda.

Good news! A donated anaesthesia machine, ventilator and patient monitor have arrived at Nkwen District Hospital, Cameroon much to the delight of the anaesthesia team and Hospital Director, Dr Ngum Joel Mbigha. This hospital has a large catchment area, but lacked a functional anaesthesia machine, meaning operations mainly were done with spinals. Patients had to be hand ventilated during surgery and recovery. With the new equipment donted by SAWW, patients will receive prompt and effective anaesthesia for surgical procedures.
