The "Backseat Realisation" & Life Update 🚗💬

👋 Hello everyone! I’m sorry I’ve been a bit quiet on here lately... 🤟✨

If you haven’t heard from me in a while, it’s because my life has taken a bit of a turn behind the wheel! I’m now driving Mya to her specialist deaf school every single morning—a 1 hour and 15-minute journey each way. 🚗💨

Spending that time on the road has given me a lot of time to think, and honestly, it’s been a huge "backseat realisation" for me. 🛣️

Trying to communicate with Mya while I’m driving and she’s in the back is a real challenge. By the time we’re halfway there, she’s often tired, and watching her struggle to get her message across when she’s exhausted is heartbreaking. 💔 It’s a very long day for such a little person.

This journey has made me realise more than ever how vital BSL is. 🤟

It shouldn’t be this hard for a child to be understood. This is exactly why I believe BSL should be taught in all schools from a young age. 🏫📚 If we start early, we don’t just teach a language; we remove the barriers that make Mya’s day so much longer and harder than it needs to be.

I want our local shops, schools, and villages in Tenbury and the surrounding areas to be places where she doesn’t have to work so hard to be heard. 🏘️🌈

👋 Mya’s day out! 🐴

I had such a lovely time at Caspian Wood today with Mya and her mum for Mya's session. Mya was the best little helper carrying the horse feed and watching the horses from a safe distance! 🧺🥕

She absolutely loved spotting the sheep, chickens, ducks, and bunnies—though I think the mud might have been her favorite part of all! 🦆🐰🌧️

Seeing her explore reminds me why Mya’s Voice Project is so vital. We want Mya to be able to tell everyone—from the shops in Tenbury to the schools in our neighboring villages—all about her muddy adventures! 🏘️🎒

✨ Sign of the Week: THANK YOU ✨

Now that the Mya’s Voice Project is officially becoming a charity, I want to teach our community the sign I use most often: "THANK YOU." 💖

I want to see this sign being used behind the counters in our shops, in our local businesses, and on the playgrounds of our schools—not just in Tenbury, but in all our beautiful neighboring villages too! 🏘️🛍️🏫

✨ How to do it: > Place the fingertips of your flat hand (dominant hand) to your chin, then move your hand away from your face in a smooth motion. It’s like blowing a kiss, but without the lips! 💋🖐️

I’ve been "heads down" lately because Mya’s Voice Project is moving into its next exciting phase! 📂✨
​Our Constitution is officially ready. It’s essentially a giant toolkit that will help us bring BSL training and support to:

​I was thinking today about how much we teach our children to "use their words." For some, like Mya, those "words" are in her hands. 🤟❤️

The "Secret Code" Weekend Challenge! 🕵️‍♀️🤫

Want to keep the kids entertained for 10 minutes this weekend?

Give them a BSL alphabet sheet and ask them to "fingerspell" their favorite snack or a secret message to you across the room! 🍎🥪

It’s a brilliant way to keep their brains ticking over, and they absolutely love having a "secret code" that only they know. 🧠🤟

26 Letters, One Big Way to Include Everyone! 🤟
​Did you know that the British Sign Language (BSL) alphabet is one of the easiest ways to start breaking down communication barriers?
​Part of my goal for Mya’s Voice is to get some alphabet posters into every classroom. It means that even if you don't know the full sign for a word, you can spell it out. It’s the perfect "way in" to making sure no one feels left out of the conversation!

It started with a look in Mya’s eyes that I will never forget. 🤟💔
​There is nothing more heartbreaking than watching a child you love try so hard to communicate, only to realise that nobody around them understands. I saw Mya navigating a world that felt quiet and isolating, and I realised it wasn't because people didn't care—it was because they didn't have the tools.
​When I looked into fixing that, I hit a wall. So many of you told me you wanted to learn BSL, but the barriers were everywhere:
❌ No local courses.
❌ Long travel times.
❌ High costs that made it impossible for most.
​I decided then that "Mya’s Voice" wouldn't just be a small project. It would be a mission to break those walls down.
​I believe BSL shouldn’t be a "specialist" skill you have to hunt for—it should be taught in our schools. It’s a vital life skill that builds a bridge to children like Mya.

​THE MOMENTUM IS BUILDING: 🚀
I am so thrilled to share that Tenbury High School has already shown interest in possibly setting up a BSL Club! To see our local students leading the way is everything I hoped for.

​OUR HOPE FOR TENBURY: 🏫✨
Now, we are looking to our primary schools and nurseries/playgroups. Our dream is for every local school to get involved. It doesn't have to be a full curriculum—even just a "Sign of the Day" in assembly or at registration would change a child's world. Imagine every child in Tenbury knowing how to sign "Friend," "Play," or "Help."
​We are building the blueprint here in Tenbury, and once we’ve shown how it's done, we’re taking it further afield. We won't stop until every child/adult has a chance to be heard.

The magic of being heard. 🤟✨

I’ve spent my Tuesday morning playing with Mya, and there is honestly no better feeling in the world than seeing her face light up with a massive smile the moment she realises I’ve understood exactly what she’s saying—and she understands me too.

That split second of pure connection, where the barriers just disappear, is everything. It’s the "why" behind every single thing I do.

Mya’s Voice was born from these smiles. My mission is to make sure that this feeling of being understood isn't just something Mya feels at home, but something she—and everyone else who uses BSL—feels every time they walk down the street in Tenbury Wells.

Every sign we teach and every bridge we build is for that smile. We aren't just learning a language; we’re making sure no one in our town ever has to feel "unheard."
