Lodge Field and Beeches Fields Local Nature Reserves This site is about The Lodge Field and Beeches Field Local Nature Reserves in Ironbridge. Green corridors are environmentally important for wildlife.

The Lodge Field and The Beeches are local nature reserves (LNR) that are part of a green corridor along the northern edge of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage site. They provide and connect habitats for the plants and animals that rely on them, enabling species to move freely. They also provide a calm breathing space for local communities. The fields are managed by a group of volunteers, Ironbridge Meadows Group (IMG), in partnership with Telford and Wrekin Council, who own the land. If you would like to get involved, we would love to hear from you.

The Meadows have had their annual cut and collect - thank you Telford & Wrekin for arranging and as always a great job done by the contractors. You will notice a few areas left uncut - this is to provide refuge for invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles through the autumn and winter.

Thankyou to Shropshire fire and rescue who responded quickly to the grass fire on Beeches Field earlier this evening - the fire was soon put out and the area damped down.

We had a digger on Beeches Field this morning creating scrapes on our South facing slopes for reptiles and butterflies to bask. It’s also great for mining bees, Birds’s-foot trefoil and Squirrel-Tail Fescue ( a rare plant in Shropshire but present on the LNR)

Yesterday’s Community Orchid Count on Lodge Field found 28 Southern Marsh orchids and 5248 Common spotted, making a record total of 5276 orchids.

Think is the highest ever recorded! Thank you to all who took part.

The orchids can be difficult to spot at first but once you get looking you find that they are everywhere! They are a great indicator species of a healthy hay meadow full of flowers ( a field which is cut and the grass collected once a year in August).

We did a reptile and bird survey this morning checking the refuges and bird boxes on both fields - great to see occupied boxes, nesting moorhens and slow worms and a grass snake who stayed still long enough to be photographed. 19 different bird species were seen including willow warbler, lesser whitethroat and black cap - why not join us on Sunday morning early (5 am Beeches pool) to enjoy the dawn chorus on National Dawn Chorus Day.

What an interesting and enjoyable morning was had pond dipping at Beeches Pool - so many wonderful invertebrates inhabit the pond! The pond gets a brilliant rating against the Big Pond Dip criteria showing it to be a great haven for wildlife.
