In case you missed it, Teesside Live's coverage of the call for Thirteen to implement a rent freeze.

It's prompted a lot of responses in the comments, what do you think?

If you’re sitting on £800 million in reserves, rent hikes aren’t ‘inevitable’ — they’re a choice.

We are calling on Thirteen to cancel this rent increase.

Rents of Thirteen tenants have gone up by 23% since 2022-23 alone, and Thirteen want to hike up their rents by a further 4.5%. That isn't sustainable when our members are already struggling to get by.

We need a rent freeze now, and Thirteen can afford it!

It is disappointing that Thirteen group, who own much of, if not all, the social housing in Billingham South Ward, is putting up rents 1% above inflation for the 5th year in a row. This is despite having increased surpluses from £632M to over £838M over that period, including a surplus of over £34M last year.

Therefore, as your ward councillors, we will be writing to the CEO and the Leadership Team to freeze rents this year.

🚨WE'RE HIRING 🚨
Are you interested in fighting for change to improve housing conditions in our area? Too many tenants are made homeless or living in terrible housing conditions because their landlord (social or private) will not listen. We are looking for a motivated individual who wants to contribute to the cause of organising tenants into a renters’ union.

You would need to be able to work independently, but with the support of a wider team of volunteers. Your hours would be flexible (up to 15 hours per week) depending on your own requirements. Pay would be at £18 per hour.

Your day-to-day work would involve:
Doorknocking to learn more about tenant issues, and recruit new members
Supporting tenants to meet together and plan collective campaigns to solve issues affecting them
Helping to organise events and protests

You would report to a democratically elected volunteer committee elected by Housing Action Teesside members.

If you are interested, please email over your CV to [email protected] and we will arrange a call to discuss the role further. If you want to learn more about the role before making an application, you can ring our Chair Tom on 07482839439.

"39 homes to replace 264, good way to cut waiting lists".

Too many Teessiders are trapped in desperate housing need. We need developments that create more social housing, not less.

The bungalows plan comes as applicant and social housing provider Thirteen are preparing to demolish the existing Fleet House and Thorntree House

We were out speaking to residents in Hume House today. Tenants in tower blocks in Stockton are asking, why won't Thirteen put concierges back in their buildings to keep tenants safe and support vulnerable residents?

Thirteen have more than £800 million in the bank (£200 million more than they did 5 years ago). They could afford to ensure their tenants felt safe in their homes.
