Cardio is an essential part of achieving your fitness goals and lowering body fat. But many people think the only way to get cardiovascular exercise is to spend countless, motivating-sapping hours on a treadmill.

But that's not the case!

Playing a sport like soccer can be a much better way to get a good cardiovascular workout, without having to sign up for monotonous treadmill sessions. In this post, we'll tell you why joining a local soccer game can be better investment than a gym membership, and how it'll complement your strength goals.

There's a reason why soccer players often grace the cover of fitness magazines. The world’s most popular sport is also one of the toughest cardiovascular activities. Soccer players can run up to 12km in a single game, and the movements include a combination of aerobic and anaerobic actions.

Group fitness is a great way to get a workout in without having to think or plan. Here at Kick About each class is structured with a warm-up, a balanced workout and a cool-down.

The warm-up is designed to help you properly raise your heart rate while loosening your joints and muscles before jumping into strenuous activity. The instructor will coach you through each segment of the workout. The cool-down will help you safely lower your heart rate and stretch all the major muscles worked during class. Research shows that as little as five minutes of outdoor exercise can improve self-esteem (Barton and Pretty, 2010). Any outdoor location will do, but being near greenery or water enhances this effect. Interestingly, low- to moderate-intensity physical activity show greater improvements in self-esteem than high-intensity outdoor exercise. Outdoor exercise provides a mental health boost beyond that of indoor gyms. Moving outdoors has been shown to reduce anger and depression and improve mood (Barton and Pretty, 2010).
