Have you tried making charcoal briquettes?đŸ”„
Charcoal briquettes are easy to make and have lots of benefits.
- They are cheaper than charcoal, and burn hotter and for longer.
- They are less smoky than wood, so there’s less indoor pollution when used for cooking.
- They do not require trees to be cut down, which helps to protect the environment.
- The equipment is cheap and the process is easy.
You can turn any woody waste materials, such as dry leaves and coconut shells, into charcoal briquettes. Use them yourself, or make more to sell.

Find out how interfaith savings groups are building relationships and strengthening communities in this interview from our newest Footsteps edition: Managing money

01/05/2026

What does it look like when a community comes together to change their future?
For people with limited access to financial services, credit and savings groups are transforming lives. They provide a safe and secure way to save money. But it doesn't stop there! The group’s savings are used to provide loans, allowing members – often women, people with disabilities, and members of minority groups – to invest in small businesses and meet their goals. They also create funds to help community members with medical bills or family events.

Curious about exactly how a community sets this up and makes decisions together? Watch the video to see the practical steps!

What excites you most about seeing communities work together to overcome challenges?

If you would like to learn more, you can read about how to run a savings group and get even more practical resources and advice in the Savings and credit groups edition of Footsteps.

What if the key to change is already in our hands? Have you ever heard of CCT? It stands for Church and Community Transformation.

It’s not just a project—it’s a lifelong journey. Instead of waiting for outside help to solve problems, local churches and communities come together to recognise the amazing resources God has already given them right where they are.

At its heart, CCT is about shifting mindsets. We believe that poverty is often rooted in broken relationships—with God, ourselves, others, and creation. The journey of CCT is about restoring those relationships and helping people discover their own dignity and potential to create lasting change from within.
What’s one resource or skill in your community that you think is often overlooked?

We also take a moment to look at what the Bible says about money and possessions, inviting us to view our resources through a lens of faith.

What does it take to heal from adversity?
We believe the answer to this question lies within communities themselves. That's why we're excited about our Connecting Hearts and Minds training manual. It's a resource for community facilitators to create safe spaces for people to express emotions, strengthen coping skills, and find healing from psychological distress, all in their own context. It’s about standing with individuals who are facing adversity and finding strength in each other. What does 'community care' mean to you?

When farmers learn innovative techniques and manage their finances together, it leads to significant improvements in their lives. This integration, seen in programmes like ‘Agriculture for Life’ and ‘Savings for Life’, has shown remarkable results in innovation, food security, and overall economic wellbeing. đŸŒ±

Research confirms that joining both types of programmes offers greater benefits than either alone. Even in unstable environments, this approach builds community resilience and restores agricultural activities, bringing dignity and stability.

This article highlights success stories, like in Rwanda and South Sudan, showcasing the power of combining resources and knowledge.

Have you seen similar initiatives in your community? How do you think combining different approaches can enhance community development? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
