Fàs Mòr

Fàs Mòr 'S e ionad cùram-cloinne Gàidhlig a th'ann am Fàs Mòr suidhichte ann an Slèite. Fàs Mòr is a Gaelic-medium childcare facility situated in Sleat.

Fàs Mòr – growing with Gaelic

Fàs Mòr was established in 2003 by a group of dedicated parents in Sleat on the Isle of Skye in response to the demand for local childcare provision, and who recognised the benefits of offering this provision through the medium of Scottish Gaelic. Today Fàs Mòr is located within a purpose built facility on the college campus of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. We offer a warm wel

come to all children, parents and carers and to any families visiting the area. We care for children from birth to twelve years old and offer a number of after school clubs during term-time. Our friendly and qualified staff work together to help every child to settle in, find their feet and enjoy their time with us. We adhere to, and believe in, the National Care Standards of Dignity, Privacy, Choice, Safety, Realising Potential and Equality & Diversity. All our staff are fluent Gaelic speakers and we encourage everyone to speak Gaelic at all times. We are very proud of our success and experience in developing and encouraging children’s fluency in Gaelic. We aim to promote the benefits of bilingualism and multilingualism and to widen this opportunity to all and we work closely with our local primary school, Bunsgoil Shlèite, to support parents in the care and education of their children. Fàs Mòr is registered with the SCSWIS, the registration and inspection body for children and young people’s services in Scotland. Registration number SC2003052372

We are a non-profit making organisation, registered as a charity in Scotland, SC

In August the children have been looking at various different carbadan (vehicles). This was inspired, originally, by one child's love of ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ but then, realising how many of the children loved looking at pictures of other vehicles (such as làraidhean (lorries), (bàtaichean) boats and plèanaichean (planes) we expanded the topic and kept it going to continue the whole month.

Craft-wise the children made paper-plate bàtaichean and loo-roll bàtaichean-tumaidh submarines for the sea; created a trèan (train) with themselves as passengers and used trains to paint tracks; coloured in busaichean (buses) and càraichean (cars) to go on the road and made rocaidean (rockets), plèanaichean and bailiùnaichean adhair theth (hot-air balloons) to fly in the sky.

The tape road in the tuff tray was very popular, as was the car wash we set up there. We had put trains in the sand to fish out with the magnetic fishing rods, and they developed this idea to pull the trains through the paint we had set out in the tuff tray! They also practiced their counting by driving cars around roads shaped as numbers.

The sand, naturally, saw the diggers, and the Jenga locks stood in for bricks, as they built walls and then buried them under sand. They also flew planes into the sand which made for a soft landing. Meanwhile they played with boats not only in the water but also in shaving foam, which was an altogether different experience.

We also took the vehicle theme outside, with more car washing in the sun, and the large blocks in the garden turned into a very narrow road for the motorbike.

The older children who were here in the summer also joined in, making window decorations and colouring their own cityscapes with vehicles to drive around them. They also created an indoor track out of the wooden blocks for the younger children to drive the toy cars around on, and, of course, created the largest train track ever (apparently) which was greatly enjoyed by their young friends.
