Our meeting tomorrow, Tuesday 2nd June, is a Social Evening for members only. Please bring along a photo that’s important to you so we can share our special memories with each other. These ‘show and tell’ evenings are always great fun and help us get to know each other a little better! 📸

We had an excellent turnout for our recent talk on AI and Robotics earlier this month.

Our speaker Nick Hawes who is Professor of AI and Robotics at Oxford University (amongst various other roles) shared fascinating insights into how rapidly this field is evolving. Although he’d spoken to other WI groups before, he told us he’d had to completely rewrite his presentation because so much has changed in just the last few years!

It was really interesting to hear about the very latest research and to learn why AI is so essential in enabling robots to act autonomously. Nick explained about the type of challenging tasks that robots can carry out, such as exploring nuclear sites, and how beneficial it was that they can work in environments that would be far too dangerous for humans. It really got us all thinking and Nick was inundated with questions afterwards - a sign of a very engaging talk indeed!

Our next meeting is this Tuesday (5th May). Our speaker will be Tackley's very own Nick Hawes, Professor of AI and Robotics in the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. (He's also our member Kate's son, and our former WI President Rosie's husband!)

In his talk, Nick will cover why AI is needed to enable autonomous behaviour for robots, and the kinds of AI approaches that are being used with robots today. He'll illustrate this with examples from his own research, including robots that inspect industrial facilities, sample the ocean, and explore nuclear sites.

A little round up of what we got up to in April.

We started the month with a fascinating talk by Russell Cherry about walking the Thames Path. Russell illustrated the talk with traditional slides which gave it a wonderfully nostalgic feel and really brought the route to life.

Later in the month a small group of us met up for coffee at the Grain Store in Middle Aston – a great place to have a good chat and catch up.

Pam, Sue and Mary-Lou also joined members from other WIs in the Oxfordshire Federation on a coach trip to Tyntesfield, a beautiful Victorian Gothic Revival National Trust property. After exploring the house and grounds the coach took them on to Aerospace Bristol where they got to see Concorde up close which was quite an experience! ✈️
