Prom SOS
It began last year, after a break up and the pressure of exams and finding a new place to live. The inevitable conversation about prom. Sophie wanted to go to her prom. I couldn’t afford to go out and buy her an expensive dress, shoes, hair and makeup. Someone kindly loaned her a dress and she was excited about going. Unfortunately, things conspired against us and in the end she didn’t go and the dress was returned for someone else to be able to wear. Six months down the line, tragedy struck. My mum passed away. I was very down. Fast forward a few months and on a ‘Pay it Forward’ page was a lady very kindly donating her prom dress to a girl, in order for her to go to her prom. I thought, “What a wonderful gesture, but what if that dress could be loaned out again and again, giving lots of girls the chance to go to prom?”
And so, Prom SOS was born. A referral service, so that those in need get the chance to go - boys and girls one and all.
Dresses, suits and accessories all donated by the kind hearted people in Swindon and it’s surrounding areas, all wanting to take the financial pressure off those families, so that the kids can enjoy their last big blow out before moving on into college, apprenticeships and employment. A chance to wear something extravagant! To feel like Hollywood royalty!
So I take my hat off to you Swindon. Without your donations, generous hearts and sense of community, Prom SOS would never have got off the ground. Your beautiful dresses would still be in the cupboards, never to see the light of day again. Know that it is down to you, that the smiles from prom will be on these kids faces. It’s down to you, that the financial pressure has been taken off. And it’s down to you, that these kids will have a night to remember.
