At the end of 2022 we bought and I had the crazy idea to make leather.

Today I can say I have done it

After years of planning and learning, months of building and doing I have finally made full sides of veg tanned cattle leather

It is now into the final part of the process to finish them, some I will finish on farm, some will go to a specialist finisher

I couldn't have done it without the support and help of so many people including my wife , Barry Knight, , Jacki Rodikis, , , , , Suzie Fletcher, , , Adrian Bytom, Chris Harrap, , Kerry Senior (), Richard Daniel, , Karl Flower, Tim Copland, Adam Griffin, David Harris (Beamhouse Engineering) and by no means least

Last week saw the 1st UK Micro Tanners Conference hosted here at , generously supported by . We had over 60 visitors from the UK, New Zealand, North America and Europe with a mix or artisanal tanners, micro tanners, industry professionals and those interested in tanning.

Monday afternoon we ran tours of the tannery and farm with a the “Great display of leathers” on display, followed by b**r and stone bakes pizzas at the local bar / microbrewery. The Tuesday and Wednesday were back-to-back sessions covering a whole range of topics with a meal made from our Organic beef on the Tuesday night.

It was a resounding success and far exceeded my expectations. I am incredibly grateful to all the speakers and to everyone who attended for their contributions to make it such an amazing 3 days. I was particularly pleased with how the blend of artisan and industry professionals was appreciated and respected with multiple follow up conversations planned.

So much energy and passion from everyone who attended, a real community feeling, surely a start of something…

First batch of master tannin tea. 600 litres, 250kg mimosa, 60C. The last big hurdle, it’s been a long road. Thanks to for the genius idea of a gas powered hot tub heater to get 1000 litres to 60C

Today we had the honour of hosting on the farm and at the tannery for their award winners leather meet up.

The day started with a talk about and all we do here followed by a tour of the tannery. We then had a session by the amazing talking about some of the stunning projects that he has done over his career. Truly inspirational and shows how far you can push leather as an architectural material.

After lunch everyone split into two groups. The first was a makers workgroup lead by and then in the tannery a gathering of incredible makers sharing information and stories, it was an honour to sit in and listen.

An incredible day amongst expert leather makers including leathergoods
