Taiko is a Japanese form of drumming that is usually done in a group and is very powerful and fun. The drums vary in size from big to very big. Once the big drums are hit, energy starts flowing in the group and the excitement is fantastic. The drumming involves the whole body and is accompanied by movement (kata) and shouts. This art form is very prevalent in Japan, and is now also popular in the
US and Europe. In the UK there is also quite a vibrant scene, and several groups have been formed throughout the country. Aber Taiko practice regularly once a week for 2 hours. As the drumming involves the whole body each practice will start with some warm ups and stretches. Practice sessions will involve drills, introduction of new pieces and practice or development of established pieces. Occasionally, Aber Taiko will arrange workshops with visiting teachers. These workshops may take place during the weekly practice or on weekends. Once a year, in September/October, we will open our first hour of practice for new people who would like to try. In these sessions previous experience of Taiko is not necessary – there is always a first time! Those who have any previous musical or dance experience will find that quite helpful. These sessions are on a pay as you go basis at £7/£5 concessions per session (supplement payable if there is a visiting teacher). Taiko is a physical activity so we ask everybody to work within their own limits. Membership is open to any person, regardless of race, age, gender or sexual orientation, who feels enticed by Taiko and would like to commit to practicing regularly and supporting other people in the group in their Taiko journey. Membership involves a monthly subscription of £23/month. As a member you may also be involved in the running of the group and may receive the benefit of free or subsidized attendance at workshops given by visiting teachers. You will be able to contribute to creating and developing our pieces if you wish and can. We hope to getting back to performing at various events throughout the year. We perform to inspire people, to spread the joy of Taiko all around, and because it is fun and exciting.
