REHOMED - Doris is a 15 month old lilac and tan bulldog, (around 17kg so only small) she is spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated, flea and worm treated and has a clean bill of health. She will be rehomed with 5 weeks free pet insurance.
Doris's story is one of a lucky escape, she was booked in to be put to sleep by her owners who had convinced themselves that there was something medically wrong with Doris, it took a lot of convincing to hand her over, she did not need to die.
She had a history of urinating in the house and her crate overnight, this then recently extended to some poohing in the house too and some squabbles with the other resident female dog (which very much seemed to be linked). There had been several vet trips since a pup, wee sample tests and a course of antibiotics which made no difference but no detailed tests or even bloods were ever run, the vets were a bit baffled as despite not being able to do the testing they needed, they couldn't fathom what was going on.
The vet did suggest the toileting was behavioural which the owner dismissed but after Doris arrived with us and us immediately getting all the relevant blood and urine tests done, ultrasounds and inspection of her bladder and waterworks everything was all perfect and normal and it was very clear to us that her toileting is behavioural and not medical. She is not incontinent and she does know to toilet outside, but what she doesn't ask to do is to go out and when she needs to go, she will just go with very few cues (if you think an 8 week old pup).
The toileting in the house has been less frequent since arriving simply due to the fact that the door is open a lot of the time, she is being rewarded positively for going outside instead of being told off for going inside and she is starting to "get it!. We want to make it clear that anyone taking this girl on is going to need to be prepared for some work longer term on helping educate her and put the effort in to making it work and accept that she may not always get it right. You will need to have hard floor surfaces down stairs for sure.
So that's all the negative stuff over with, there is LOADS of positive stuff to say about this lovely young girl.
Doris is an absolutely SUPER girl, she is so friendly with everyone she meets, she loves lots of fuss and attention and is a real sweetheart of a girl. She is a very typical head strong bulldog when the mood takes her and she needs a bulldog savvy home who know just what huge characters these dogs can be but she will honestly just make a family home complete with her antics and games. She is so very loving, full of energy and is a happy, gorgeous pup.
We were told she couldn't put on weight.....she has gained well over half a kg with us already in a short amount of time, she does inhale her food and we have introduced her to a slow feeder in an attempt to slow her down a bit, she does need telling to be gentle when taking treats.
Doris is generally very dog friendly and loves playing with the many other dogs she is in foster with but again, she is a very typical bulldog so if someone has a pop at her or she gets overstimulated she can carry this on into a squabble. For this reason we are seeking a home for her as an only dog where she can have all the 1-2-1 attention she craves and we are then not setting anyone up to fail. We are very happy to consider homes with bull breed savvy children aged 5yrs and over, she has been really good at ignoring our livestock through the fence but would be best in a cat free home.
She can be a little strong at first on the lead until she settles down, her recall is good. She travels brilliantly in the car and loved the vet. She sleeps downstairs quietly at night, we don't crate her here there is no need, she hasn't been at all destructive when left and is a well behaved girl in the home.
Doris will need a home with a nice secure garden to play in and where someone is around a lot of the time (or you will never crack the toileting thing).
