āØ GÄthÄs in Praise of the Buddha ā Uttered by UpÄli Thera āØ
This poster was created inspired by the profound verses spoken by UpÄli Thera, extolling the sublime qualities of the Buddha ā the Fully Awakened One, perfected in wisdom, virtue, serenity, and liberation.
Each gÄthÄ reflects a unique aspect of the Buddhaās incomparable nature. I share all ten verses here with their English meanings, in reverence and gratitude.

Dhīrassa vigata-mohassa,
Pabhinna-khilassa vijita-vijayassa;
Anīghassa susamacittassa,
Vuddha-sÄ«lassa sÄdhu-paƱƱassa;
Vesaman-tarassa vimalassaā
Bhagavato tassa sÄvakoāham asmi.
Meaning:
Of the wise one whose delusion has vanished,
Whose inner barrenness is broken, the victorious conqueror;
Free from anguish, harmonious in mind,
Perfected in virtue, endowed with noble wisdom;
Who has transcended disharmony and is stainlessā
Of that Blessed One, I am a disciple.

Akathaį¹ kathissa tusitassa,
Vanta-lokÄmisassa muditassa;
Kata-samaį¹assa manujassa,
Antima-sÄrÄ«rassa narassa;
Anopamassa virajassaā

Meaning:
Of the one without perplexity, contented,
Who has abandoned worldly gain and delights in altruistic joy;
Of the human who has completed the holy life,
Bearing his final body,
Immeasurable and immaculateā
Of that Blessed One, I am a disciple.

Asaį¹sayassa kusalassa,
Venayikassa sÄrathi-varassa;
Anuttarassa rucira-dhammassa,
Nikkaį¹
khassa pabhÄsakassa;
MÄnacchidassa vÄ«rassaā

Meaning:
Of the wholesome one, free from doubt,
The supreme guide and trainer of beings;
Peerless, radiant in Dhamma,
A bringer of light, without uncertainty,
The hero who has cut off all conceitā
Of that Blessed One, I am a disciple.

Nisabhassa appameyyassa,
Gambhīrassa mona-pattassa;
Khemaį¹
karassa vedassa,

Meaning:
Of the supreme leader, immeasurable,
Profound, having attained noble silence;
The bringer of safety, true knowledge itself,
Firm in Dhamma, inwardly restrained,
Freed from every bondā
Of that Blessed One, I am a disciple.

NÄgassa panta-senassa,
KhÄ«į¹a-saį¹yojanassa muttassa;
Paį¹imantakassa dhonassa,
Panna-dhajassa vÄ«tarÄgassa;
Dantassa nippapaƱcassaā
Bhagavato tassa sÄvakoāham asmi.
Meaning:
Of the noble one dwelling in solitude,
Freed through the destruction of fetters;
The purified one, a wise and friendly counselor,
Whose banner is lowered, lust abandoned;
Disciplined, free from mental proliferationā
Of that Blessed One, I am a disciple.

Isi-sattamassa akuhassa,
Tevijjassa brahma-pattassa;
NhÄtakassa padakassa,
Passaddhassa vidita-vedassa;
Purindadassa sakkassaā
Bhagavato tassa sÄvakoāham asmi.

Of the foremost seer, without deceit,
Perfected in the three knowledges;
Cleansed, master of expression,
Tranquil, knower of true wisdom,
The mighty destroyer of defilementsā
Of that Blessed One, I am a disciple.

Ariyassa bhÄvitattassa,
Patti-pattassa veyyÄkaraį¹assa;
Satimato vipassissa,
Anabhinatassa no apanatassa;
Anejassa vasippattassaā
Bhagavato tassa sÄvakoāham asmi.
Meaning:
Of the noble one with a fully developed mind,
Who has attained the goal and proclaims it;
Mindful, endowed with insight,
Inclining neither forward nor back,
Master of the unshakableā
Of that Blessed One, I am a disciple.

Samuggatassa jhÄyissa,
Ananugatāantarassa suddhassa;
Asitassa appahīnassa,
Pavivittassa aggapattassa;
Tiį¹į¹assa tÄrayantassaā
Bhagavato tassa sÄvakoāham asmi.
Meaning:
Of the meditator rightly risen,
Pure, with an unobstructed mind;
Unattached, goal-free,
Living secluded, having attained the highest;
One who has crossed over and guides others acrossā
Of that Blessed One, I am a disciple.

Santassa bhÅ«ri-paƱƱassa,
MahÄ-paƱƱassa vÄ«talobhassa;
TathÄgatassa sugatassa,
Appaį¹ipuggalassa asamassa;
VisÄradassa nipuį¹assaā
Bhagavato tassa sÄvakoāham asmi.
Meaning:
Of the peaceful one, rich in wisdom,
Of great understanding, free from greed;
The Thus-Come, the Well-Gone One,
Peerless and without equal,
Confident, subtle, and masterfulā
Of that Blessed One, I am a disciple.

Taį¹hÄ-cchidassa buddhassa,
Vītadhūmassa anupalittassa;
Ähuneyyassa yakkhassa,
Uttama-puggalassa atulassa;
Mahato yasāagga-pattassaā
Bhagavato tassa sÄvakoāham asmÄ«āti.
Meaning:
Of the Awakened One who has cut off craving,
Free from defilement, completely unstained;
Worthy of offerings, truly venerable,
The supreme and incomparable individual,
The great one who has reached the pinnacle of renownā
Of that Blessed One, I am a disciple.
