🍼🍰WE LIKE TO MOVE IT MOVE IT…🍰🍼

So much effort goes into making the donated human milk that it’s important nothing goes to waste. This is why SERV Surrey & London's daytime milk team are always out and about, making sure the collections are made at a convenient time for the mums and delivered swiftly to the various milk banks, maternity wards, NICU’s and SCBU’s. And all of these units work together to make sure that every baby that has a need, has access to human milk.

This is why sometimes, it’s not the mother we collect from, but a transfer between units; something our milk team are always happy to help with (especially if there’s cake involved🍰🎂!) It’s always a pleasure to get out on a run… and the chance to see twice the normal number of colleagues is great opportunity to catch up and build friendships. So imagine our rider’s surprise when they arrived at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust maternity unit, to find out that this was not going to be one run, but 2… 4 very full boxes of human milk ALL FROM ONE GENEROUS MUM! Could we manage that? Of course we could!

It was great to catch up with Beena and the gang at Croydon… and of course we always have a warm welcome at St George's Hospital Maternity Services where Tracy, Sheshe and Philip were on hand to receive the many many many bottles of milk. And lets not forget our own star, ‘Grace’, who’s smooth power delivery and massive road presence made light work of the heavy London traffic… and even had a few waves from passers by!

🏃🏽‍♂️‍➡️🏃‍➡️TAG… YOU’RE IT!!!🏃‍♂️🏃

Let’s talk relays…. Here at SERV Surrey & London, we are often the final ‘link in the chain’ when it comes to moving samples and other important products around the country… this is especially true during holiday periods like Easter 🐣, when scheduled services are reduced.

So how does this work? A hospital will need to send a sample to London for analysis. The hospital then calls their local blood running superhero’s… who then contact all the other groups between them and London to see if there are volunteers available to complete the run. If the answer is yes, then the run is a go!!!

This is what happened this Easter weekend when volunteers from South West Blood Bikes - Serving Devon, YFW Bloodbikes, SERV Wessex - The Blood Runners and SERV S&L all got together to run a sample from deep in the south west of the UK, all the way to the east end of London. All at zero cost to the NHS, delivered in a timely fashion with a full chain of custody.

And as a bonus, we got to have a little meet up at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust… always great to chat with other groups and hear their stories.

Thank you to all involved… and thank you to ‘Cedar Tree’, donated by Caterham Rotary. She’s got over 50K miles on the clock and is still going strong 😍

✨🌟SHOUTOUT TO THE DADS 🌟✨

We often celebrate the mums here at SERV Surrey & London … who put in huge effort, donating milk when so much else is going on in their lives. However there’s often a much bigger story taking place behind the scenes! One thing that strikes all of our Team, who collect the donated breast milk from the all over London and Surrey, is the amount of support that’s going on in the homes. There’s often grandmothers and grandfathers, friends and other family members… all pitching in where they can 🫶

And of courses, there’s the dads... dads like Cameron. Not only helping out mum Bethanie where he can, but also helping out our rider, taking the very full milk boxes to the bike and getting in an impromptu workout along the way…. after all, those guns didn’t build themselves!! 💪💪💪

So thank you to all the unsung hero’s… the grandparent, the friends and family… and of course, the dads.🙌🙌

It really does take a village…

✨🌟OUR NIGHTTIME FRIENDS✨🌟
People often ask if we get lonely at night… and it’s a good question. On the face of it, jumping on a motorbike at 3 in the morning and heading off on your own can seem potentially lonely. But the reality is quite different.
Every run starts with a call from the controller, who will update regularly during the course of the run. Some are chattier than others… but they’re always positive and grateful for our efforts. We might see other SERV Surrey & London Volunteers at the hatch… always a great time for a catchup whilst waiting for product🩸🧬. And then it’s off to our final destination. And this is where the greatest joy is… we visit these hospitals many times throughout the year and we get to know the Biomedical Scientists there. And even though they’re incredibly busy and work incredibly hard, they’re always grateful for our efforts and will often chat about what’s going on. Grace’s rider had just such an encounter at King's College Hospital NHS recently. Not only was it great to catch up with Mark, Mohamoud, Along, and Fiona, but when Mohamoud heard about the new BMW sitting outside, he was keen to try it for size… maybe we have a new recruit in the making! 👀👀

🏌️🏌️‍♀️⛳️ANYONE FOR GOLF?!?⛳️🏌️‍♀️🏌️

SERV Surrey & London is a community based charity. We’re 100% volunteer run… which means that every penny we receive, goes towards maintaining our mission… no fatcat charity salaries here!!!

Which is why it means so much to us when we have community support; and why we’re pleased to announce that Betchworth Park Golf Club have chosen us for their Club Charity for the year. We met up with Club (men’s) captain Chris, who explained why they chose us. He revealed that he has relatives in another Bloodbike Group and that his club members liked the idea of supporting a charity that supports the whole community. Having run a charity previously, Chris said he knows how difficult it can be to keep up with the daily running costs and is aiming for their golf club to support us in this endeavour.

Well… they’re off to a flying start having raised over £1000 so far, thanks to their Captain’s Drive event 🫶. Great job to all involved 🥳🥳. We’ll be keeping you updated with their progress over the coming year… keep following to see how we’ll be supporting them in their efforts

🍼🍼GOT MILK?!?!🍼🍼

There are many great advantages to volunteering for SERV Surrey & London … and one of the best is the people we get to meet. Like baby Alfie and superstar mum, Joanne. After many boxes of donated breast milk, the was Joanne’s final donation (and what a donation… another two whole boxes🥳🥳)! It’s mums like Joanne who go the extra mile and ensure that premature babies never go without. It’s always amazing to hear these mother’s stories and to help transport their life saving milk, in a process that’s all about mothers helping and supporting other mothers. And of course, at the other end we have amazing women like Alice, ward manager at Ashford & St. Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust , who makes sure that Joannes’s donation, goes exactly where it’s needed most!

In a crazy world, it’s these stories of compassion and caring that make the miles worthwhile.
