The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrates Mary being taken up to heaven, body and soul, at the end of her earthly life. The feast was celebrated on 15 August as early as the 5th century and reached Rome in the mid-7th century. On 1 November 1950, Pope Pius XII proclaimed the Dogma of Mary’s Assumption.

Mary already shares in God’s glory, making her a sign of hope and consolation for us. As a creature like us who is already in heaven, she reminds us that we too are called to share in eternal life with God.

In the Apostles’ Creed, we profess our faith in the “resurrection of the body” and “life everlasting.” United with the glorified body of Jesus, Mary’s destiny is also the destiny of all who are united to Christ through faith and love.
