On Thursday 4 June, Sutton Amnesty will be joining Kingston UK HKers Stand with Hong Kong and 藝文社 Sutton Hong Kong Culture and Arts society for a candlelight vigil in Manor Park, to commemorate the Tiananmen Crackdown of 1989.

Being part of this vigil is especially important for the group, as our prisoner of conscience, Chow Hang-Tung, was detained after she organised a candlelit vigil in Hong Kong, five-years ago on the same date.

We hope this year’s collaboration can bring together voices who care about international human rights, freedom, and justice — to stand together, speak together, and keep watch together.

今年六四燭光悼念集會，將首次移師 Sutton 舉行。

過去四年，由 Kingston UK HKers Stand with Hong Kong 及 Sutton 藝文社合辦的六四燭光晚會，一直於 Kingston 舉行；感謝倫敦及週邊地區朋友多年來的支持與參與。

而今年，除了 Kingston UK HKers Stand with Hong Kong 及 Sutton 藝文社外，我們亦首次與國際特赦組織 Sutton 分會（Amnesty International Sutton Group）及 UK HongKongers Intertwine 聯合舉辦。

在支聯會案正進入結案陳詞之際，我們希望透過今年的合作，讓更多關注國際人權與自由價值的人，一同發聲、一起守望。

三十七年過去，歷史不應被遺忘；當仍有人被囚禁、仍有人因悼念而受壓，我們更需要堅持記憶、守護真相。

This year’s June 4th Candlelight Vigil will, for the first time, be held in Sutton.

Over the past four years, the annual vigil, jointly organised by Kingston UK HKers Stand with Hong Kong and Sutton Arts & Culture Society, has been held in Kingston. We sincerely thank friends from London and the surrounding areas for their continued support and participation throughout the years.

This year, in addition to Kingston UK HKers Stand with Hong Kong and Sutton Arts & Culture Society, we are also honoured to co-host the event with Amnesty International Sutton Group and UK HongKongers Intertwine.

As the Hong Kong Alliance case enters its closing submissions, we hope this year’s collaboration can bring together more voices who care about international human rights, freedom, and justice — to stand together, speak together, and keep watch together.

Thirty-seven years on, history must not be forgotten. While people are still imprisoned, and remembrance itself continues to face suppression, we believe it is even more important to preserve memory and defend the truth.

On Thursday 28th May, it will be the birthdays of Manahel al-Otaibi and Abdulrahman al-Sadhan.

Manahel al-Otaibi is still serving her five-year sentence, which is set to expire sometime at the end of 2027, given time served. Her family is concerned about her well-being and believe that the medication she's being administered in prison for her Multiple Sclerosis is making her foggy, and they've been alarmed during phone calls with her. They've asked if international diplomats can visit her in prison to check on her health and well-being.

Abdulrahman al-Sadhan remains forcibly disappeared with no updates on his case, and he continues to serve a 20-year sentence for satirical tweets.

Sutton Amnesty UK urges you to consider undertaking the following two advocacy and solidarity actions to give Manahel al-Otaibi and Abdulrahman al-Sadhan the most powerful birthday wish: the wish for their freedom.

On the 28th May, we must let Manahel al-Otaibi and Abdulrahman al-Sadhan know that they have not been forgotten. We hope you join us in taking these actions to advocate for justice and freedom, as no one should celebrate their birthday unjustly imprisoned.

We are delighted to have not one but two speakers at our monthly meeting on Monday 13 April 2026 from 7.30 – 9.30pm!

AIUK staff member Amika George MBE will be talking from 7.30-8pm on Amnesty’s “No Palantir in our NHS” Campaign.

From 8-8.30pm, our Sutton group member Uncle Leo will talk about activities he has been involved with in London regarding human rights abuses in Hong Kong, and how we can support these activities.

We will as usual be at the Friends Meeting House, 10 Cedar Road, Sutton SM2 5DA and also online.

Join Amnesty International UK’s bloc at the Together Alliance March on 28 March 2026 at 12pm (Zone G, position 14) and stand with others committed to defending human rights and showing solidarity with marginalised communities.

The UK is entering a period of political uncertainty, resulting in rising far-right hostility and violence towards migrants and racialised communities, shrinking civic space and deepening political polarisation.

That’s why organisations, communities and individuals are mobilising in London on 28 March 2026 as part of the Together Alliance - a coalition of organisations representing over 7 million people - to show that human rights matter and we will collectively resist hate, division and authoritarianism.

This is a call to everyone who cares about justice, equality and human rights.

According to UNICEF and latest reports, over 270 children across have been killed since 28 February, with most children killed in and . These figures are staggering and escalating. They are a stark testament to the toll that conflict is taking on children.
