GSG Official Through the group the families are able to share experiences, help each other with prob Galactosaemia literally means ‘galactose in the blood’.

The Galactosaemia Support Group brings families with galactosaemic children and adult galactosaemics into contact with each other and offers support where most needed. Galactose is a sugar which mainly comes from lactose, the sugar found in milks. Lactose is normally broken down into the two simple sugars, galactose and glucose. The galactose is then broken down further and used in many parts of t

he body including the brain. In galactosaemia it cannot be broken down completely and used because of deficiency or absence of an enzyme, galactose-1-phosphate uridyl transferase or Gal-1-PUT. Galactose, galactose-1-phosphate and other harmful chemicals build up and lead to the serious illness that occurs in the first few weeks of life once the baby is fed on milk containing lactose. It is a lifelong condition.

After extensive testing and careful review with specialist metabolic dietitians, we are delighted to share that President Brie and President Camembert are now considered suitable to include in the galactosaemia diet.

⚠️ Please remember:
Only the President brand has been approved.
Do not use Brie or Camembert from any other brand, as they have may not be low enough in galactose.

Celebrating rare disease day on 28th February!

Galactosaemia is a rare genetic inborn error of carbohydrate metabolism - specifically galactose! In the UK about 1 in every 45,000 babies are born with galactosaemia which is around 12-18 babies born each year.

Altogether there are 300 million people worldwide live with a rare disease.�There are over 6000 different rare diseases.
72% of rare diseases are genetic.�70% of these genetic rare diseases begin in childhood.

So although galactosaemia is rare - rare disease is not rare!
