The Buzz Club

The Buzz Club Real Gardens; Real Science! Free to join projects investigating the science of wildlife gardening.

Run by volunteers at the University of Sussex, the Buzz Club is a citizen-science charity consisting of scientists and non-scientists, adults and children, all working together to find out more about our garden wildlife, and what we can best do to help them! The Buzz Club was founded in 2015, with the aim of harnessing the power of citizen science to generate important data on pollinators. Since t

hen, we have has diversified our horizons and now undertake a variety of fun, nationwide surveys and experiments suitable for children and adults alike. We also provide important information about how we can make our urban and rural landscapes more pollinator-friendly, from installing “bee-hotels” in your gardens, allotments or balconies, to advice on which plants are best for pollinators. By becoming citizen scientists, we hope to engage our members with their local environments and increase awareness about the importance of protecting our pollinators and nature as a whole. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that we look after insects, giving them and us a future. We believe that with your help, we can take important steps towards answering questions about bees and other pollinators and hopefully how we can act to halt their declines.

Want to help conserve bees in your garden? Join The Big Bee Hotel Experiment today!

This project has been running since March and has 328 hotels registered to contribute to scientific research across the UK. All you have to do is put up a bee hotel, register it, and send us a photo once a month.

We are looking for Late Check-In hotels! These are hotels that are new and/or empty, that have been put up June onwards. This will help us determine the nesting preferences of later season bees, such as this leafcutter bee, photographed by Sam James.

Thanks to Lizz of Making Bideford the Little Green Town for helping us to set up some bee hotels as part of the 'Bee Creative' project with The Buzz Club. These are now in the wildlife corner at the Marland allotment and it will be interesting to see whether or not they are attracted to the brighter colours.

The boys are going crazy around these bee hotels!

Here we had a few species of Osmia (mason bees) including blue mason bee males, all waiting for the females to emerge. No need for the females to worry about finding their husbands, there are loads to pick from - but any excuse to use 🙌🙌

Get these scenes in your garden by putting up a bee hotel and joining . Find out more here or using link in bio: https://www.thebuzzclub.uk/thebigbeehotelexperiment
