In this features Laura, who talks about how her son, Ethan, started using an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device, and how their family supported him. Their story shows how the right communication support can open up new ways to connect.

In , we’re sharing stories to help people understand and accept the different ways autistic people communicate.

Are you autistic, or do you buy food for an autistic person? We would love to hear from you.

We are running a short survey to understand what matters most to autistic people when buying and eating food. Your insight will help shape future corporate partnerships, so we work with brands, products and services that truly reflect the needs and interests of our community.

The survey takes around 10 minutes, is completely anonymous and closes on 23 February: bit.ly/3MbyQYa

Furness Autism Expo is coming soon! ⭐️

On Thursday 16th April, we're bringing an all day conference by and for autistic people to The Bridge at Portland Walk in Barrow-in-Furness - and we want YOU to join us!

The day long conference will give you the opportunity to learn more about autism. Whether you're a working professional, a parent/carer, and/or an autistic person yourself. We hope there will be something of interest for everyone who attends.

Furness Autism Expo will include:

Speakers - Various talks and panel discussions from local autistic people and professionals. Focusing on subject areas including creativity, diagnosis pathways, employment, mental health, and more!

Community Showcase - Stalls hosted by various charities, community groups, and statutory services that work with autistic people.

Sensory Space - An opportunity to try and be shown lots of fidgets and sensory equipment, hosted by Hanna Munro Occupational Therapy.

Film Screening - A lived experience film screening platforming various local autistic voices. Produced by Alex Taylor.

The Furness Autism Expo CIC (Community Interest Company) was established late last year following a series of committee meetings including local autistic individuals and members from organisations including Autus Cumbria, National Autistic Society - Furness Branch, Shindig Furness, and Triple A Project.

We will be announcing the full schedule and open bookings soon. If you would like to have a stall at our Community Showcase please email [email protected] - note that we will be prioritising organisations and groups that work specifically with autistic people and/or have services that are particularly catered to them.
