Knit Wits - Haus of Sibling exhibition at Kingston Museum on until the 26th September 2026. Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10am-5pm, free entry.

“An archive exhibition of SIBLING knitwear shaped by the rituals of a Saturday night” (text taken from exhibition flyer).

Many thanks Kingston Heritage Service for giving local knit and stitch groups a private view of this exhibition curated by Kingston School of Art Fashion promotion students in collaboration with The Creative Brain and Kingston Museum.

While you are there, why not also look out for a selection of stitched maps created by our members for our last exhibition. These are part of the Bobbin Around Kingston:

“A trail through Kingston and surrounding areas.
Inspired by the Knit Wits: Haus of SIBLING exhibition, Bobbin’ Around Kingston shines a light on the creativity and variety of textile crafts. Located around Kingston Museum are 15 embroidered maps produced by members of the Kingston Stitchers for a project originally displayed at Penny School Gallery in 2024.

Inspired by the places they call home, they weave together the locality and heritage whilst showcasing Kingston as a place that continues to bring people together. From Kingston and Surbiton to Teddington and Thames Ditton, they cover the borough of Kingston upon Thames and its neighbours along the River Thames and beyond.

Alongside the 15 maps are contributions from three of Kingston Libraries Knit and Natter groups: Tolworth, Old Malden and Tudor Drive. These groups meet regularly at their local library to knit - collaboratively and individually - and to natter! The three groups involved have produced something representative of their part of the borough whether that be a source of local pride or simply local landmarks” (Kingston Museum flyer).

Posters of our members work are now displayed in Kingston Station if you happen to be passing through, in the waiting rooms and on the concourse.

There are also posters of work by Creative Industries at Kingston College Ariadne’s Thread and Kingston Camera Club.

Today is World Embroidery Day - Where did the origins of this day come from?

It seems that it came from a local group - Skåne Sy-d of Broderiakademin, part of the Swedish Embroiderers Guild. As their website is in Swedish, I found a useful translation online:

“The first World Embroidery Day took place on July 30, 2011 in Vismarlöv, Sweden. As the founders stated, “The importance of embroidery must be made known and World Embroidery Day will spread around the world. Make 30th July a day filled with creativity for the sake of Peace, Freedom and Equality.” (See the entire Manifesto and photos on www.broderiakademin.nu.)

Textile reflects our world; embroideries can show the expressions of our time. Embroidery and textiles can focus on the social injustices between countries.

By the means of embroidery we can draw attention to the necessity of engaging in the force of textile in global trade and with it in world peace. Textiles is a power and let us use embroidery as an inspiration for people to engage in creativity that leads to a better understanding between countries and between people.

To embroider is a peaceful occupation. It can be traditional made from a common remembrance, drawn designs, from a pattern, or from your own imagination. You embroider for joy, beauty, decoration and for the creation of identity.

Stitches can be decorative, beautiful, comforting, repeating, healing, telling, pleasurable, rebellious, caressing and perfect.

People embroider out of joy, as a hobby, professionally, for the bare necessities of life and as an act of freedom. You embroider together with others or in meditative solitude.

We want to acknowledge embroidery as an act of free creativity, which can lead to free, creative thoughts and ideas. We want to tie our embroidery threads from the privileged northern hemisphere together with stiches that are sewn by embroidering sisters and brothers all over the world.

Great Karen Nicol exhibition - Fashion & Style The Sunbury Embroidery Gallery until the 16th August 2026. Fabulous embellished French workwear jackets and one off vintage bags are on show, wearable art all for sale. The cafe also has some of Karen’s beautiful mixed media and embroidered animal art pieces, also for sale.

Embroidery Traditions of Afghanistan SOAS Gallery exhibitions drawn from the Karuncollection developed in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum - until the 19th September 2026. A great exhibition showcasing the beautiful and distinctive embroidery and textile traditions from the different cultures in Afghanistan.

Two of our members had a great three days with the wonderful tutor Amanda Clayton recently hosted by - Paper, Stones, Scissors workshop. Exploring qualities and working with paper to inform textile work, including: rubbings, embossing, punching, joining, inlay and pleating. As always, Amanda was very generous with her knowledge, processes and materials - she also had many amazing samples to explore. We are really looking forward to welcoming Amanda back to our group at the end of September for a two-day workshop - Quietly Composed, before she retires from teaching to focus on her own work.

Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art exhibition on until 8th November 2026. A fantastic exhibition that takes you through the evolution of the house from the 1920s to today under the creative director of Daniel Roseberry.

Modern classic silhouettes with unconventional details - embellishments, embroidery and unusual fabrics. Unconventional zip placements and buttons to fantastical hats and gloves. Collaboration with surrealist artists such as Dali, Schiaparelli brought surrealism into the fashion world. has continued this signature with an equally bold, dramatic and modern aesthetic. A must see for fashion and textile enthusiasts.

Thanks to all our members who turned up for a very hot members evening at the end of last month. Photos show work from mini-workshops and work from workshops undertaken during this year’s programme.

We shared ideas about couching from workshop and showing examples done by one member from her beautiful book. Creating Canadian smocking samples and Kantha inspired pouches. Transferring images onto fabric which was inspired by our workshop with .Kumihimo inspired braiding and English paper piecing techniques. Thanks again to all our members who volunteered to organise and share ideas and learning with our membership.

Vibrant and graphic Asafo flags are on display at Dyrham Park National Trust, part of the Journeys exhibition, a display partnership between Karun Thakar and Dyrham Park, Blickling Estate & Osterley Park National Trust properties.

These appliqué and embroidered cloth flags were created by the Fante people and depict proverbs, messages and symbolism. The flags were used by village-based militia groups. The textiles, holding memories and stories of the past, sit amongst historic portraits of those involved with colonial administration. A thought provoking exhibition, creating conversations between the house and these textiles and our colonial past.
