We have one space available for our upcoming Zoom workshop with Cas Holmes - Extreme Stitching on Saturday 6th June, 10am-4pm.

We will reference ideas surrounding hand stitch and the principles of Mouttainai (too good to waste) as a primary means for creating marks and textures. We will explore a range of found cloth and paper surfaces and different threads to build up a range of distressed, torn, manipulated and collage surfaces to create new elements of interest in your work.

The surfaces you bring to the workshop paper, cloth, painted, dye or plain will help to direct the nature of the marks you make and will lay the foundation for our experiments as we construct, and create marks in our cloth and paper to create distressed and reconstructed collaged textile samples.

Materials list:

• Basic sewing equipment: needles, pins, scissors, assorted threads of your choice.
• Fabric and papers:
- Small pieces of natural fibre cloth and paper containing textures/patterns:
- These can include found fabric from old clothes/household items with seams, textures or
containing a piece embroidery or lace. Cotton linen cloth fabrics with floral motifs. Small pieces of
neutral- cream cotton/linen/silk fabrics.
- Pieces of calico/linen or similar to use as a base
- Feel free to include worked test pieces or discards from your own practice (dyed/printed cloth,
stitched fragments)
• PLEASE NOTE THESE WILL BE CUT UP AND RE-USED
• Notebook/camera (optional)

Please email: [email protected] for price details, further information and booking.

Thank you for a fantastic weekend of activities. Wonderful to really appreciate all the beautiful samples and work Ali brought with her for us. Ali is such a warm and generous tutor - sharing both materials and processes, and providing fantastic support and scaffolding to our members to help them progress their work. We look forward to seeing how these pieces progress.

Thank you for a wonderful talk yesterday evening - Cloth Stories.

Ali is interested in stories, stories of the ordinary and everyday in people’s lives. Overheard conversations, notes in an old jotter, a collection of love letters, or simply a shopping list on the back of an envelope. Words are Ali’s passion, everyday words, found words and even stolen words… what’s the story behind them? These are the starting points for Ali’s process as she creates meaning, through research and facts, but also what discovering and working with these materials evoke her own mind.

We are looking forward to our weekend with Ali in workshops exploring our own stories and how we can translate these into cloth and stitch.

All work detailed is Ali Ferguson. The last photo is a detail of Ali’s fabulous stitched dress.

Fantastic exhibition - Touchlines: The Delicate Boundaries of Care and Cloth at on until the 31st May. Fantastic venue and work.

3rd Floor, Sunny Bank Mills, 83-85 Town St. Farsley Pudsey LS28 5UJ, West Yorkshire

Open Thursday-Sunday 10am – 4pm.

“This year’s theme was developed in collaboration with Anna Turzynski, the Mill’s Arts Director, drawing on the site’s rich industrial and cultural history.

In Touchlines, artists explore the subtle thresholds where contact is felt, withheld, or transformed. Set within the historic spaces of Sunny Bank Mills, the exhibition draws connections between textile labour, sporting cultures, and human relationships, asking how boundaries shape intimacy, care, and collective identity.

Across a range of material-led and process-driven practices, the works foreground acts of repair, preservation, and making. Cloth emerges not simply as a medium, but as a site where emotional and social histories are embedded and reworked.

The exhibition invites viewers to slow down and reflect on the quiet gestures, fragile edges, and resilient connections tracing the points where making meets lived experience” (62 Group Website - https://62group.org.uk/news/touchlines-sunny-bank-mills/).

Fantastic exhibition - Thread on until the 6th June, do get to see it in person if you can.
