New Growing, Wildlife & Sustainability Workshops Are Coming to Millfield!
Over the last few months, we’ve been working with the fantastic support of our volunteers and learners to tidy and improve the communal grounds at St Mark’s, creating more space to grow, expanding our community garden areas and supporting the continued development of our allotment.
We’ve also been busy tidying and improving the external areas around the grounds, helping to make the space more welcoming and attractive for local residents and everyone passing through the heart of Millfield.
A huge thank you to everyone who has given their time, shared ideas and got stuck in along the way. Together, we’re creating spaces that can be used, enjoyed and cared for by the community throughout the year.
Now we’re ready for the next stage and we’ve got a brand-new programme of free growing, wildlife and sustainability workshops coming to Millfield!
Our new workshops are all about showing that growing and connecting with nature isn’t just for the summer months – and you don’t need a big garden to get involved. Whether you have a garden, an allotment, a windowsill or just a small space at home, there’s something for everyone.
We’ll be planting bulbs and painting pots, growing from kitchen scraps, propagating plants, creating windowsill gardens and building an indoor living herb wall at St Mark’s. We’ll also explore home composting and making natural fertilisers and pest deterrents, including clever ways of putting everyday household waste to good use.
And we haven’t forgotten our local wildlife! We’ll be building bug hotels, making bird feeders and creating bird feed and fat balls, learning simple ways to provide food and shelter for birds, insects and other wildlife, particularly as we head into the colder months.
There are sessions for adults, children and families, with family workshops taking place during the school holidays. The programme is particularly aimed at people who don’t have access to their own garden and those who may be experiencing loneliness or poor mental health. No previous gardening experience is needed just come along, have a go and learn something new.
Everything will be happening at St Mark’s Church, Wentworth Terrace, Millfield, Sunderland, SR4 7AD, right at the heart of Millfield.
