Repair Cafe Orkney Community repair events in Orkney

30/05/2026

I was delighted to lodge a parliamentary motion last week in celebration of Repair Cafe Orkney's first anniversary. This fantastic initiative, led by Anne Sayer and Dan Wright, hosts monthly pop-ups where individuals can bring in household items to be repaired while learning those repair skills themselves, promoting sustainability in a social setting.

In its first year alone, the Repair Café helped divert hundreds of kilograms of items from waste streams by repairing clothes, bikes, toys, and more. I would encourage anyone interested in utilising this great community resource to stop by a future session in Stromness or St Margaret's Hope. Congratulations again to all those involved in the Repair Café on reaching this milestone.

Hello Kirkwall! ICYMI - Repair Cafe Orkney is in Kirkwall for our first full session on Saturday morning 10:00am-12:30pm for your household item / textile repair needs, and the chance to learn how to fix things yourself. Plus tea/coffee/nibbles (it's a cafe after all). Hope to see you at King Street Halls.

Hello Kirkwall! A date for your diaries: the first Repair Cafe Orkney event in Kirkwall is on April 11 at 10:00am in King Street Halls. We are very excited to see you! Bring us your broken household items and our team of repairers will see if we can help you fix them. Or come along if you just want to see what a Repair Cafe is all about. Tea / coffee / biscuits available (it's a cafe).

Last check in for items is 11:45am and if you've never been to a Repair Cafe before, we work on a donations-basis and customers leave us whatever they can afford and they feel is right.

This has been an event long in the planning - and we'd like to say a massive thank you to both Employability Orkney- Restart Orkney and Old Library Coworking who both very generously offered to host the Repair Cafe on separate occasions. They're both fantastic places, very aligned with our values - but after we did *a lot* of measuring we realised we just couldn't squeeze the entire Repair Cafe offer in. So we'll be spreading out at King Street Halls.

We're also looking for some local volunteers if a Kirkwall-based Repair Cafe is to become a regular event in future. More details in the Facebook event notice - please do come along if that's of interest.

For all our Stromness friends - we will miss you and the Repair Cafe will be back in Stromness in May.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!
Join our wonderful team at Stromness as a refreshments volunteer! This is a great opportunity to meet and chat to people and be part of a truly sustainable community-run event.
Without tea, coffee and cake our Repair Café wouldn't be a Repair Café. We have some great refreshment volunteers and are looking to add to the team with a new volunteer. We are looking for someone who would be happy (after a couple of sessions) to share the rota of setting up and taking down our refreshments offer once every couple of months. You don't need to be able to bake - although homemade cakes are always welcome! You will always be supported by a great team and part of a wonderful local initiative.

Interested? Pop along to our next repair café or drop an email to Anne at [email protected].

Repair Cafe Orkney will be at the Orkney Climate Fair this Saturday. Bring your items for repair between 11am and 12.30pm. We will be offering small item repairs including electrical, mechanical and textiles and computer issue diagnosis.

And our team will be there in the afternoon too if you fancy chatting about volunteering, setting up a Repair Café in Kirkwall or have another repair query (or need a hand assembling something!)

Would you like to volunteer at a Repair Cafe in Orkney, but find it difficult to get to Stromness or St Margaret's Hope? Do you wish there was a Repair Cafe in Kirkwall/East Mainland?

Well, if you're based in Kirkwall or East Mainland, and you like to fix things (or organise other people to fix things) then we have some news.

Repair Cafe Orkney will be at the Orkney Climate Fair at King Street Halls on 7 February trialling a mini Repair Cafe for Kirkwall/East Mainland, during the morning session (11am-1pm). If you would like to try out being a volunteer at a Repair Cafe then we would love to have you! If you're interested, please fill out our volunteering form by the end of the day Sunday 1st Feb, which you'll find in the reply below.

If you don't want to volunteer on 7 February, but you'd like to come along and see how a Repair Cafe works, and/or express an interest in volunteering for future Repair Cafes in Kirkwall/East Mainland then please do! We'll happily talk to you about roles available.

Got yourself in a tangle with textiles? A knot with your knitting? Doubtful of your darning? Meet, Make, Mend is back in Stromness tonight from 5:30pm at the Eventide Room near the RNLI shop to help out.

We're a friendly bunch who share skills and knowledge and help each other out with sewing/knitting/darning/embroidering projects, and we're always happy to see new faces. Hot drinks available and (if Daniel manages to get them made this afternoon) some flapjacks to keep you going.

It's windy today so please come along only if you feel safe to be out in the wind. Otherwise we're back in a fortnight and we'll see you then.
