🔦Reports of Erratic Light Near Killantrigan Lighthouse 🎣

Yesterday HM Coastguard received reports of an erratic light seen at the bottom of the cliffs near Killantrigan Lighthouse.

The team was paged at 17:35 and responded, supported by Stranraer coastguard rescue team. After meeting with the first informant, some of the team went on to investigate the area.

Portpatrick Lifeboat was also requested to provide lighting but was stood down shortly after being paged.

The flashing light was located and confirmed to be from a fisherman set up on the shore, who was safe and not in any danger.

This incident was a false alarm with good intent. Thank you to the member of the public who raised their concerns — if in doubt, it’s always right to call it in.

Stranraer Coastguard Station Officer Colin Brown present John Harris with his certificate for 10years voluntary service with HM Coastguard, 5 years spent in the South of England & 5 here in Stranraer when he moved to the area & bought Corsewall Lighthouse Hotel.

Thank you for your service John & happy retirement from the Coastguard!!

2026 RECRUITMENT- COME JOIN OUR TEAM - AREA 16 SCOTLAND

Do you have what it takes to search, to rescue and to save?

HM Coastguard is looking to recruit Coastguard Rescue Officers for the following teams:
Ayr,
Girvan,
Ballantrae,
Stranraer,
Portpatrick,
Drummore,
Isle of Whithorn,
Portling,
Kirkcudbright,
Annan.

As a Coastguard Rescue Officer you will be trained and equipped to carry out search and rescue operations along our coastline – at any time during the day or night and in all weathers.

Coastguard Rescue Officers are volunteers trained in missing persons search, water rescue, rope rescue, helicopter operations and much more.

No experience is necessary as full training will be given. All that we ask is that you hold a full UK drivers licence and be in good health. Applicants must also live/work within 20 minutes of the Coastguard team you are applying for.

The training will run from the following dates. 10th to 13th April and 8th to 11th May.

🚨 Incident – Multi-Agency Response at Port William 🚨

⏰14:20 📍Port William Harbour.
📣 “Car over wall onto rocks.”

🔵Yesterday (Tuesday 9 September), on Emergency Services Day (999 Day), HM Coastguard Portpatrick was tasked by Belfast MRCC to an incident at Port William Harbour, along with our flank teams.

🟡On arrival, Coastguard Rescue Teams worked alongside our fellow emergency services, assisting on scene and preparing a landing site for the requested air ambulance 🚁

🔵 A reminder that Coastguard teams regularly train for multi-agency incidents like this to ensure a swift and coordinated response when lives are at risk 🔗

As Stranraer RNLI Lifeboat put it, we are also so very proud to work alongside side the local lifeboat crews, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service , Scottish Ambulance Service, Police Scotland Dumfries & Galloway Galloway Mountain Rescue Team, NHS staff & our coastguard colleagues from our operations teams & call handler’s to the helicopter crews & all our flanks teams.. our multiagency work ensures the people living, visiting & working in our area are provided with care no matter where or when they need us!!
