πŸ“’πŸ“’STRABANE PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE UPDATE 🚢🚴

Before Christmas we submitted an FOI request to see what the latest is in regard to the Strabane Pedestrian Bridge that will connect the Main Street to the Bus Station.

We are keen that this project is implemented in full and that the bridge has paths that lead to both the Bridgend and the A5 (at the rugby pitch).

The response from the Department of Infrastructure confirms that the bridge 'WILL provide connectivity to the A5' and to the west end of Waterside Street.

A Planning Application is due to be submitted late this year / early 2027.

The attached map is the latest proposed plan for the project according to the Department.

This, in our view represents the northern startpoint of the Strabane to Sion Mills Greenway as it will connect via the Bridgend into Phase 1 of the Greenway that will lead to the south of Sigersons GAA Club (which is also due to be submitted to Planning later this year).

This will be a high quality 'off-road' pathway that will give us some greener quieter walking / running / cycling space that we are in desperate need of.

We look forward to the bridge project being completed but will be keeping a watching eye to ensure that there is no slippage in its delivery.

Good to see Council discussing the next steps of the Strabane - Sion Mills Greenway project at this month's E&R Committee, papers for which have been published on the Council website.

As always we would like to acknowledge the hard work of councillors and officials who have been working with us to get the project to this advanced stage.

We need to see funding commitments (from local and central government) this year that will get Phase 1 of the Greenway (Melvin to Sigersons) closer to delivery.

Lets get those ducks in a row! πŸ¦†πŸ¦†

Good to see that the Lifford - Carrigans greenway project has been awarded a grant of €550,000 to progress the project further.

The Barnesmore Gap greenway is also to get €1 million this year.

Would be good to see similar funding set aside this year for Phase 1 of the Strabane - Sion Mills greenway! 🀞

New Strabane Footbridge - update πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸšΆ

An excerpt from DfI Roads Presentation to council this month.

As followers will know this bridge will link the carpark at Mo Charas (formerly Christys) to the bus station and provide linkages to the Bridge End (and onto what will be Phase 1 of the Strabane-Sion Mills greenway) as well as connecting to the current A5 along the back of the playing fields.

The A5 connection is not mentioned in this excerpt of the council report so we'd be keen to clarify that this proposed linkage hasn't been dropped by the Department.
