A lesser known impact of picking up litter on walks is the huge boost it gives to our mental health and wellbeing.

Even in the few minutes it takes to pick up a couple of pieces of litter while walking the dog - you can immediately see the difference you’ve made.

You also have the satisfaction of knowing that those bits of litter will not harm an animal or a child, that they’re not going to end up in the river and eventually the sea, that they’re not going to act as an excuse for someone else to drop more litter.

Try it and see - it really is incredibly simple - if we REALLY love animals, we don’t drop litter and we pick up some when we can. Keep spreading the word. So many struggle with mental health these days and this is such a simple way that really can help.

‘Selfcentered-ism’ - it might not be a word but we see examples of it every day:

cans thrown on roadsides, poo bags flung in hedges, bottles smashed in playparks.

So often it’s done in beautiful places too, by popular landmarks where the ‘insta photo’ is taken & litter dumped with no care for the next person or the animals, community & environment impacted by it.

It’s always possible to change tho’ - if the only mark of the life you live is cans scattered on the ground, isn’t it time to rethink?

Too many animals are injured by litter & the next one could be your dog or cat.

Join our campaign - our message is simple: if we REALLY love animals we don’t drop litter and we pick up some when we can. Are you in?!

Photos below taken recently in Dunnottar Woods, Stonehaven, (of the Shell Hoosie, Lady Kennedy’s Bath & the big field, now ploughed, where we removed a disposable BBQ, cans and dog poo bags). This is very near Dunnottar Castle, one of the most visited & stunning castles in Scotland.

Stonehaven is the home of Paws on Plastic although we’re proud to have members & followers from over 70 countries worldwide picking up litter on dog walks - a very simple ask when we’re out walking anyway - removing over 42 million pieces of litter every year.

Here’s our Facebook group’s new cover photo for June!

Thanks to Jo in Tasmania for this beautiful photo of Henry with some litter picked up on their walk.

Are you a member of our charity’s Facebook group? It’s a friendly, supportive community of like-minded folk from over 70 countries worldwide who pick up a few pieces of litter on walks to protect animals, their communities and the environment on which we all depend.

We like to think that we’re joined by the oceans on which litter travels, our love of dogs and our wish to take a simple action every day to protect them from harm. Here’s the link if you’d like to join Paws On Plastic.

Here’s to all who pick up litter, no matter how much.

Every single piece makes a difference, can save a life, can stop another piece entering the sea. Here’s to all who pick up but never post a photo because they think it’s nothing. It absolutely is!!! That’s the whole ethos of this charity - if we all do a little, every day on a walk, it really does add up to a huge impact, especially with 29,500 of us across social media removing over 43 million pieces of litter collectively every year!

It actually has a DOUBLE effect of deterring litter in areas where there are lots of us picking up every day as fewer people drop litter in clean areas.

So pick up a couple of pieces & be PROUD of your efforts. Post about it & encourage others, invite them to join us & let’s make picking up a few bits of litter on walks the NORM because we ALL can be that difference, no matter age, income or physical ability. It truly does only take a minute.

Thank you so much for all you do. You’re just amazing & never, ever forget it. 💕🙏🐾

A massive thanks to Donald Anderson for continuing to spread the word about our charity and its effect on Edinburgh’s parks in conjunction with the his own efforts and that of Craigmillar and Niddrie Litter Busters among others.

If you’re in the Edinburgh area and are able to support spreading our message by distributing posters and speaking to vets or dog related businesses please get in touch. As a charity run solely by volunteers, help is much appreciated.
