Litter’s litter no matter where you ‘place’ it.

It’s a strange peculiarity of human behaviour that you see so often in walks - as if ‘placing’ litter in hedges, on walls or in little nooks & crannies like hollow tree stumps isn’t REALLY like dropping litter.

It’s a conscious placing, not casual dropping - the thinking person’s littering - but doesn’t that make it even worse?

What do you think? Is it something you often see?

It’s amazing how many small pieces of plastic can be hidden in a small patch of seaweed.

Well done to Stonehaven Youth Club for removing 2.2kgs of waste from Stonehaven Beach last night, most of which was fishing net & line plus small pieces of plastic & fabric.

We’re lucky to have a very clean beach in Stonehaven but there are always pieces to be found. A huge thanks to the Youth Club for their time & efforts and those of everyone who takes action not dropping litter and picking up waste that they see around the beach and the town. In a seaside town like ours it’s hopefully obvious that any waste dropped will find its way somehow to the sea.

A lesser known impact of picking up litter on walks is the huge boost it gives to our mental health and wellbeing.

Even in the few minutes it takes to pick up a couple of pieces of litter while walking the dog - you can immediately see the difference you’ve made!

You also have the satisfaction of knowing that those bits of litter will not harm an animal or a child, that they’re not going to end up in the river and eventually the sea, that they’re not going to act as an excuse for someone else to drop more litter.

Try it and see - it really is incredibly simple - if we REALLY love animals, we don’t drop litter and we pick up some when we can. Keep spreading the word.

Sometimes you’ve just got to leave the dogs at home & make a special effort yourself.

After noticing some cans along the roadside of Kirkton Road, Stonehaven & not having litterpicked there for a few months except with the dogs, I decided to do what I could. In just one part of Kirkton Road, from the junction of Broomhill Road to the A90 exit, I removed 4.3kgs of litter including a bag of recycling (13 plastic bottles & 6 cans) plus 2 vapes which will go to the recycling centre.

It just took about 30 minutes but looks sooo much better. Is there somewhere like this in YOUR area that you could clear?

Litter breeds more litter & no litter reduces the amount of litter dropped. If you pick up litter, thanks for all you do. You’re all amazing!
